Present day Karate is categorised into four parts -- self defence, mental conditioning, physical conditioning and sport. There are many reasons why all kinds of people train in Karate. Whether you’re young or old, male or female, boy or girl, you may have one of the following reasons:
Karate is a Martial Art developed and practised over many years as a means of protecting oneself from attack. Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. The trained karateka is able to co-ordinate his mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing him to unleash tremendous physical power at will. Therefore, it is not the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka; rather it is the ability to co-ordinate mind and body. Upon developing this ability, even the smallest person finds that he has within himself the power to deliver a devastating blow to any would-be attacker. As movements in karate were originally derived from techniques in actual combat, karate helps the student in self-defence by teaching techniques such as avoidance, blocking and counter-striking. Karate helps students develop self confidence with an awareness of self protection.
Karate taught at Shuhari-Kai follows the Traditional Japanese style of Wado-Ryu (the Way of Peace & Harmony). Wado-Ryu is one of the most popular styles of Karate practised. Its founder, Hironori Otsuka, combined his knowledge of karate with several of his own adaptations from his original Jujitsu and Japanese Bushido (Way of the Warrior) to form Wado karate. He discarded techniques which were ineffective and introduced different kinds of body shifting techniques, a more upright stance for mobility, and reliance on evasion and counter techniques. Jujitsu joint locks and attacks, as well as throwing routines were also introduced into this system. Its emphasis was on skill and technique, as opposed to brute force or strength, which gave an all round effectiveness and efficiency to Wado Ryu unique in Japanese karate.
TATSUO SUZUKI (WIKF) - "Fear with regards to fighting can be overcome by mental training. It's a vital aspect of Karate training. It is important when fighting to have a strong spirit and a brave heart."
At Shuhari-Kai, in keeping with traditional teachings, the commands and techniques are referred to by their Japanese names as well as in English. For higher grades, the transition from English to Japanese terminology becomes more prevalent to the point where the student could confidently train in any Dojo, in any country, where Karate’s ‘mother language’ is used.
The syllabus taught at Shuhari-Kai follows the original teachings of the founder, Hironori Ohtsuka, which consists of basic techniques, combination techniques, blocking combination techniques, semi-free fighting techniques, Katas etc. Progression through the grades consist of performing a predefined set of these techniques proficiently. Techniques become more advanced and build upon each other as progression through the grading system is achieved. Katas (form) especially, become more involved and complex with some katas containing up to 76 separate moves!
As can be seen, although physical, Karate helps develop mental discipline too. Knowledge of the Katas, techniques, Japanese instructions, etiquette, coupled with the development of Zanchin (awareness), Kime (focus), and composure sets Karate apart from other sports. The mental aspect of training means karate can help us attain a higher state of personal being. It can help us achieve the ultimate goal of the mind and body working as one, promoting peace and harmony. At Shuhari-Kai, through the teachings of Karate, students are taught the virtues of humility, respect, patients, discipline and concern for others.
GICHIN FUNAKOSHI – "Karate is not only the acquisition of certain defensive skills, but also the mastering of the art of being a good and honest member of society."
The values of Karate to modern man are numerous. In our everyday lives we often forget the value of exercise to both our physical and mental health. The practice of karate tones the body, develops co-ordination, quickens reflexes, and builds stamina. In karate, as all parts of the human body are involved when training, it is excellent in assisting overall physical health. At Shuhari-Kai, each lesson begins with a session consisting of stretching and cardiovascular warm-up activity. Fitness is developed throughout the lesson with a series of strengthening exercises, flexibility exercises and cardiovascular endurance activities that are designed to benefit the whole body.
The father of modern karate Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) always promoted the healthy benefits of training. In his adult life it was said that he never once visited a doctor or took medication of any kind! (he died in 1957 aged 89!). Likewise, the founder of Wado-Ryu, Hironori Otsuka (1892-1982), continued training up until his death also at the age of 89.
GICHIN FUNAKOSHI – "Karate is a well rounded, highly challenging form of exercise, and it will enhance physical health as well as maintain it".
Hironori Otsuka is credited with the introduction of the first rules and regulations for competition free fighting to be incorporated into his system, the first karate style to do so, the others soon followed. Sport Karate is now so popular that is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as sport.
Many students enjoy the challenge of competition. In karate you can participate in both kumite (fighting) and Kata (form). The Kumite is fast paced not only for the spectator, but requires precision skill and control by the competitor. In karate you pull your technique, scoring points by showing the judges what you could do in a self defence situation. The Kata competition shows a combination of grace and power in technique through a series of choreographed movements that represent the competitor defending themselves in a multi attack environment. Both provide a sense of self accomplishment and build confidence by performing in front of their peers and an audience. There are many competitions held every year, from local club competitions to National and World events. Shuhari-Kai students who wish to pursue an interest in sport Karate are encouraged to join the squad team and developed to become champions. The Shuhari-Kai squad has won many individual and team national and international titles over the years for both Kata and Kumite events including the WIKF National Championships and the USK International Championships.
TATSUO SUZUKI (WIKF) – "In Judo it was always the big guy who won, but Karate was different. With speed, timing and good spirit I could defeat any opponent large or small."
