Shuhari-Kai's annual Summer Camp took place from Saturday 29th May to Saturday 5th June 2010 at Seashore holiday camp at Great Yarmouth. Amongst various training activities taking place there were a few Black Belt gradings being undertaken, team activity challenges and
competitions. The weather as we arrived on Saturday was the weather always commonly associated with camp, grey and rainy, you could only hope things would pick up! The first night
consisted of getting settled in, saying hello and discussing the week ahead.
As we awoke for the first day of training, a few hangovers had to be cleared but none too major. As the first day of training commenced we were put into teams for the week who would accumulate points and eventually become team champions. The events varied over the week from the
ABCD game to a Kata competition.
Monday training was basics, slight fighting, an introduction to the week!
Tuesday training had consisted of a team game, sword fighting, Katas, basics and knife defences. Alex Sell and Jodie Miles took a fighting class, while Ali Ayerman took his grade.
Wednesday, ABCD game was played twice to warm everyone up. Alex and Lawrence Grovsenor shared half the class with Lawrence taking Kata and Alex taking the Kumite class. Following this there were some team activities where teams had to create a play in which a knife was
involved. These plays varied from Dave's posh mugging of Jodie, to Rhys declaring his undying love for Billie! Later Alex completed his blocks section for his grading instead of completing this the following day.
Thursday was the day of the black belt gradings, with Alex, Jodie and Andrew Ayerman. There was normal training until half past ten with Lawrence taking the black belts for a light training session while sensei Richard Burridge trained the kyu grades on their blocks and Katas,
etc. As the black belts came Alex was being sick because of a stomach bug, a good start to this grading! The gradings started off with the basics, then combinations, then blocks with Alex stepped to the side having completed his blocks the day before. The Katas soon commenced
with the fitness following and finally the fighting. At the end of the day everyone passed their grades. Alex and Jodie 2nd Dans with Andrew 1st Dan.
Friday was the day of the serious hangovers! The day kicked off with a fighting competition which was followed by the declaring of points for the teams. The winners were Dave’s team, runners up by one point were Alex's team, joint third were Amir’s team and Andrews team!
Everyone who attended the camp enjoyed the training and ensured the trip was an enjoyable one.
Well done to Ali Ayerman, Alex Sell, Andrew Ayerman and Jodie Miles on passing their gradings.
