A small squad of five from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club competed at the Meopham Open Junior Championships on Sunday 16th November 2009 which was hosted by Ken No-Sen. The trip to Meopham in Kent
proved fruitful for some as they returned home with two silvers between them.
Callum Alboni and Billie Lowry were the only squad members to compete in the Kata events at this tournament with Callum in the Mixed 9-15yrs, 6-4th Kyu category and Billie in the Mixed U15yrs, 3-2nd Kyu category. Callum chose to perform Pinan
Nidan in the points scoring initial round and scored 6.9, 6.8 & 6.8 from the three judges totalling 20.5. The score wasn't high enough to allow Callum to progress to the final four knockout stages. Billie performed Seienchin Kata in her category scoring 7.0, 6.9 & 6.9 from the
judges totalling 20.8 but like Callum the score failed to make the final cut with 0.1 being the difference.
The Kumite events soon started and Callum collected a silver in the Boys 8-9yrs, 5th Kyu & Over category. Callum's event was a round robin where Callum lost his initial fight 1-0 but took the decision in the next to claim 2nd spot.
Aryan Ayerman competed in the Boys 10-11yrs, 5th Kyu & Over category but his competition was short lived as he lost out 1-0 following extra time in his opening round fight.
The Boys 12-13yrs, Novince-6th Kyu category saw Rhys Floyde in action. Like Callum's event, this too was conducted as a round robin between three competitors. Rhys lost his opening round fight 8-3 but came back in his next match winning the fight 2-0
to secure the silver medal position for himself.
Ali Ayerman fought in the Boys 12-13yrs, 5th Kyu & Over category and won his opening round match 2-0. However, that score line was reversed in the 2nd round as Ali bowed out early suffering a 2-0 loss.
Billie competed in the Girls 10-11yrs, 5th Kyu & Over category and faced a bigger opponent in her opening round match. Billie's opponent proved too strong as Billie lost the fight 9-1 suffering a few knocks along the way.
Overall the squad did well and were pleased to bring home two medals.
