Welsh Bushi-Kai Karate Championships

Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts were the only students from Shuhari-Kai karate club to attend the Welsh Bushi-Kai championships held at the Afan Lido in Port Talbot Wales, on Sunday 1st April 2007.

The first event was team kata. The girls were supposed to enter this event with a third team member but as she didn’t show for the competition they had to find another student who would enter with them. With 5 minutes to go they asked Laura from the Welsh Higashi team, Laura was a lot lower grade than the girls so they only had a choice of Pinan’s to do, they decided to do Pinan Nidan, they done really well and was in time but was unfortunately beat 2 flags to 1 which was not a great surprise as they only had 2 minutes to practice the kata before they were called up.

The next event to be called was Jodie’s category; mixed 12 to under 16 years 3rd kyu and above. She was in this event with another 20 students. Jodie received a first round bye, in round 2 she performed Bassai-Dai and won 3 flags to 0, round 3 saw Jodie perform Seienchin kata and yet again took all 3 flags, the next round was a little harder and up against Elliot Evans from Vale karate in Wales she decided to perform Unshu and dropped a flag but still took the win 2 flags to 1, putting her into the final and up against another Welsh karate ka, Jodie this time decided to perform Annan and took the win 3 flags to 0 and the gold medal.

Whilst Jodie was up they called the adult female category, Jodie had also entered this event but they managed to start without her by doing the top half of the list, which team mate Sophie Roberts was in. Sophie had a first round bye, then went on to win the next round with Bassai-Dai as her opponent forgot her kata half way through and was disqualified, Sophie then decided to perform Seienchin kata and yet again took 3 flags to 0 which put Sophie into the final. Jodie was then called up for her first round which she performed Bassai-Dai and took 3 flags to 0, in round 2 she performed Seienchin and yet again took all 3 flags, in round 3 she decided to do Unshu as the other competitor was very good but Jodie just missed out by losing 2 flags to 1, giving Jodie a bronze medal. The final now with Sophie up first and up against the competitor Jodie had just lost to it was going to be hard Sophie performed Unshu just as Jodie did, but lost the final by all 3 flags, but this did give her the silver medal.

As the kata had all finished by 12.30 we thought we would soon be on our way home but we were wrong as the girls had another 5 1/2 wait until there Kumite events started.

Sophie was called up first and just becoming 16 years old herself last week she was the youngest competitor. She was entered into the ladies 16 to 21 year’s category. Sophie done really well up against the other competitor but with not many of her techniques scoring the final score was 2 points to Sophie’s 1.

Jodie was next up in her category 14 to 15 year old girls. She was the smallest competitor out of the 10 who entered into it. Jodie received a first round bye then came up against Wales’s Natasha Paton, with both girls slogging it out and both being warned for contact, Jodie’s jaw was then knocked out, and she seemed to give up which resulted in her losing the match.

All in all the girls enjoyed there day to Wales and came back with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. As parents we enjoyed the quiet trip back home.

Squad, Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts
