Toyakwai Greater London Open Championships

The Toyakwai Greater London Championships were held on Sunday 18th February 2007 at Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham, Essex. Not only is this a tough competition, it's right on our doorstep which makes this event very appealing. A small squad of six from Shuhari-Kai attended this competition with three competing in Kata only and three in Kumite only.

Aimee Sell competed in the Mixed U16yrs, U4'10'', 3-1st Kyu category and as with all Kata categories, the events were judged by points from a single Kata. Aimee performed Annan Kata and secured a score of 7.5, 7.4 & 7.3 from the three judges totalling 22.2. This score was to leave Aimee in 2nd place overall settling for Silver, 0.2 behind category winner Jack Newey from Khalsa Karate.

Both Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell competed in the Mixed U16yrs, Dan Grade Kata category. Sophie performed Annan Kata and scored 7.3, 7.2 & 7.2 from the three judges totalling 21.7. Alex performed Suparimpei Kata and scored 7.4, 7.4 & 7.3 from the three judges totalling 22.1. Alex finished in second place settling for Silver, 0.1 behind winner Emma Lucraft from Ishinryu. Sophie finished just 0.2 outside of the medal positions.

The Mixed U16yrs Team Kata events saw Alex team up with Harry Cannon and Mark Hansford whilst Aimee had teamed up with Emma Lucraft and Rachel Newey. The boys team performed Bassai-Dai Kata scoring 7.5, 7.4 & 7.4 totalling 22.3 whilst the girls team scored 7.2, 7.2 & 7.2 totalling 21.6 for their performance of Bassai-Dai. The boys team collected Gold with the girls team collecting Bronze.

The Kumite events soon started and the Ayerman contingent was out in force with Ali Ayerman, and cousins Aryan and Andrew Ayerman all in action for Shuhari-Kai. Unfortunately for the three boys, their participation in the competition was short lived as the failed to reach the medal rounds.

Well done to all who competed even if you didn't medal - representing your club is the honour, medals are the bonus.

SQUAD: Ali Ayerman, Andrew Ayerman, Aryan Ayerman, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
