Five students from Shuhari-Kai travelled to Dudley in the West Midlands on Sunday 18th February 2007 to take part in the United Kingdom Open Championships being held by P.C. karate.
It was well attended with over 500 competitors, from all over the country including some from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Egypt which made it more of an International rather than just an Open.
In the first event Billie Lowry and Callum Alboni were together for the 9 years and under Kata category, Billie performed Pinan Godan and scored 6.9, 7.0, 7.0, totalling 20.9 Callum also performed Pinan Godan and scored 6.5, 6.9, 6.6,
totalling 20.0. Both students just missed out of reaching the top eight high score but with 55 competitors in there group they done exceptionally well.
Next up was Mixed 15 years black belt category, this also was very well attended with 33 competitors in it, Jade Lewis was first up and performed Seienchin and scored 6.1, 6.2, 6.0, totalling 18.3. This put Jade just outside of getting
through to the last eight. Jodie Miles took to the mat next and performed Annan Kata, Jodie scored 6.4, 6.4, 6.2 totalling 19.0 which put her in third place and through to the next round. After some deliberations of who goes against whom they decided to put the top four
up against each other and so Jodie was selected to go against the person who came second overall. Jodie performed Unshu but lost on flags, but with so many in their category it was a good achievement for both girls.
Next was our only senior competitor Dawn Lowry. Dawn performed Kushanku in the ladies any grade section, being as there was only eight competitors it went straight to flags, Dawn up against a very experienced black belt and unfortunately
lost out 3 flags to 0 but it was a good try as this is only the second time Dawn has entered an outside competition.
Next it was Kumite with Callum Alboni taking to the mat in the 7 years and under any grade category, Callum had a first round bye then stormed in, in his next round winning 7 points to 2, his next fight finished 11 points to 1, but this was
the end for Callum as he lost the next round by 8 points to 0 but with so many in his category he done so well to get to where he did.
Jodie was up next but unfortunately lost out 8 points to 4 but it should have been a disqualification to her competitor but with the warnings not being put up on the score board it was given to the other girl but Jodie took the result and
came away smiling. Jade was next and in the same category as Jodie she came up against a girl a lot bigger than herself. Jade done well until she lost her footing (due to having to wear foot pads or be disqualified) she got her toe hooked up underneath and the girl trod
on her toe so she had to forfeit the match as she couldn’t stand on her foot for some time.
While Jodie and Jade was on the mat Billie Lowry was called up, after receiving two byes she then went on to win her first match 5 points to 0, her next round was a lot closer with the scores going to 2 – 2 it was Billie who scored the next
point in extra time, this put Billie into the final again taking the score to 6 points each it was another 1 minute extra time but unfortunately it was decided by the referee that her opponent scored just before her but Billie was very pleased with the result and her Silver
medal.
