Callum Alboni became Shuhari-Kai's Golden Boy as he became TKA Grand Open Champion at the Toyakwai Grand Open Championships held recently. Callum, competing with four other members of the Shuhari-Kai squad, travelled to Clacton on Sunday
17th September 2006 taking part in both the Kata and Kumite events within his grade and age group. Callum came home with a Kumite Gold, Alex and Aimee Sell both came home with Kata Silvers with Jodie Miles capturing a Kata Bronze. Shane Mitchell
featured well but unfortunately didn't medal this time.
Callum participated in the Mixed U16yrs, 6-4th Kyu Kata event performed Pinan Nidan. The three judges scored his Kata 7.0, 6.9 & 6.8 giving him a total score of 20.7. Unfortunately this left Callum outside the top medal positions. Callum
did however claim Gold in the Boys Under 4'0'', Novice-6th Kyu Kumite category. With a low turnout he was propelled straight into the semi-finals. Callum opened up a quick lead to establish a decisive gap. Although he dropped a couple of points he was the clear victor winning
6-2. The final proved a little closer for Callum but once he established the lead he held on to the end to claim Gold with a narrow 3-2 victory. The smiler really did have something to smile about this time!
The Mixed U16yrs, 3-1st Kyu Kata event saw both Aimee Sell and Shane Mitchell in action. Shane was the first of the duo to take to the mat and performed Unshu Kata. Shane scored 7.1, 7.1 & 7.1 from the three judges totalling
21.3. This score was to leave Shane outside of the medal positions on this occasion. However, Aimee Sell did manage to gain a Silver as her performance of Annan Kata scored 7.3, 7.2 & 7.2 totalling 21.7 from the judges leaving her in second position overall. Shane
went on to compete in the Boys 5'3'' & Over, 5th Kyu & Over Kumite event. After receiving a 1st round bye Shane was within medal contention in the 2nd round but failed to make the semi-finals as he lost out 8-5. Shane did really well to pull back an early 5 point deficit but
the gap was just too big for him turn it round and he lost out in courageous fashion.
The Mixed U16yrs, Dan Grade Kata event saw both Alex Sell and Jodie Miles competing together. Alex gained a Silver after receiving a score of 7.4, 7.3 & 7.3 from the three judges totalling 22.0 after performing
Chatanyara Kushanku Kata. Jodie performed Unshu Kata and scored 7.3, 7.3 & 7.2 from the judges totalling 21.8 leaving her in tied joint third with tow other competitors. The three tied competitors had another Kata round and Jodie performed Annan Kata. After receiving her score
she remained tied once again for the final bronze position with another competitor. The judges chose to decide the position using the flag system. Jodie performed Bassai-Dai and took the final Bronze position with a 2 flags to 1 win. As Alex was suffering from a cold he
chose not to compete in Kumite. However, Jodie went on to compete in the Girls U16yrs, 4'10''-5'3'', 5th Kyu & Over category. Jodie lost her opening round match 9-0 but her opponent was subsequently disqualified for being over age as he hadn't realised the age restriction was
in place. In a turn around it was Jodie that was disqualified in round two as she received 4 contact warnings after catching her opponent once too often and which subsequently put her out of the competition.
Squad: Callum Alboni, Jodie Miles, Shane Mitchell, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
