Alex Sell earned a hard fought place in the Southern Regional Boys 14-15yrs Team to compete in the Children's Regional
Championships being held in Sheffield on Saturday 18th March 2006. Alex travelled up to England Karate headquarters in Bisham Abbey to take part in the regional selections. Alex won his opening match 3-0 against Ken-Bu Kan's Gavin Bailey but then met Gavin's team mate, Alex
Little, in the next round. The encounter finished in a draw with the scores at 2-2 despite Alex not having a least 5 good points scored for him. In extra time Alex Little got the point. A re-match then ensued and once again a couple of clear points were not awarded to Alex
meaning the match ending in a draw once again, this time at 3-3. Once more Alex Little was judged to have scored first in extra time. Alex then had a further 3 matches with Alex winning all these encounters to be finally award his place in the team.
Alex was part of the successful 12-13yrs Boys team that secured gold at last years event having won
both of his fights against the opposition from Northern Region and the Midlands Region. This year's contest is going to prove a lot tougher as Alex only turned 14 yrs old in January and will be facing lads coming up for 16. But that just goes to show the sort of ability and
potential he possesses, that he has the ability to compete at a much higher level in terms of age and weight than he actually is.
The week before his selection to the Regional Squad, Alex made a trip to Upminster Golf Club to attend the annual Havering Sports Competitors awards ceremony. Alex was nominated in the Junior Boys Sports Competitor category and was a finalist for the third
time in four years. This time however, it proved third time lucky as Alex beat the other two finalists to be crowned Havering Junior Sports Competitor for 2005. That rounded off a very successful year for Alex who amassed over 50 medals in 2005, 30 of them being gold. This year
it will be tougher on him as he's once again the bottom of the category, this time the 14-15yrs one but we're sure that Alex will prove his metal once again to show why he's up there with the best of them. |
