Toyakwai Capital Open Karate Championships

Four squad members travelled up to Clacton on Sunday 15th May to take part in the Toyakwai Capital Open Karate Championships. Alex Sell was the first to compete in the Under 16yrs Dan Grade Kata event. Alex performed Chatanyara Kushanku scoring 7.5, 7.4 & 7.1 from the three judges totalling 22.0. Alex was the first to compete in this event and held onto the lead until the very last Kata was performed which just pipped Alex by 0.1 leaving Alex with Silver.  Aimee Sell went one better in the Under 16yrs 3rd-1st Kyu Kata event. Aimee was drawn about two thirds down in this event and performed Seienchin Kata. Aimee scored 7.2, 7.2 & 7.3 from the three judges totalling 21.7 which put her in pole position with a clear lead which she held onto until the end. A fine display from Aimee with yet another Gold to add to her collection.

The Kumite events soon commenced and Alex was up first again. Alex won his opening round match with a 6-1 win and won his semi-final match 5-0 with his opponent being disqualified towards the end after catching Alex in the face one too many times. The final was a close event which Alex finally lost 5 points to 6. Another fine display from Alex who collected his second silver trophy of the day.

Dean Bannister and David Wales took part in the Male 16-18yrs event and came up against tough opposition. Both Dean and David suffered a first round exit but decided to enter the senior kumite event too. I think they both regretted that decision in the end as the competitors gathered for the start of the event as they were by far the smallest in this category. Dean took a hammering in his opening round fight as he was caught a couple of times in the stomach with a side kick which sent him sprawling. David didn't fair much better as he received a few heavy blows as he too was knocked out in his opening round. I think they were actually please to loose considering they hadn't even faced the bigger opponents yet to fight. Well done guys, very brave (foolish, yet brave).

The foursome ended the day with 1 Gold and 2 Silvers.

Squad: Dean Bannister, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell & David Wales.
