TKA Greater London Championships

Our largest squad for a while attended the local TKA Greater London Championships held on Sunday 20th March held at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham, Essex. It was great news for Santi Moonie as she collected a Gold in her first open competition. Santi came through three rounds to claim Gold in the girls 4'10"-4'3" Novice to 6th Kyu event. Santi then went on to pick up another medal, bronze, after teaming up with Jade Lewis and Dawn Lowry for the Womens team Kumite event. Silvers were picked up by Alex Sell in the Mixed U16yrs Dan Grade Kata event and the Junior team Kumite event. Alex performed Chatanyara Kushanku in the points round scoring 21.5 placing him in the silver medal position which he held onto to the end. Jodie Miles was also in this category but after performing Bassai-Dai she finished just outside the medal positions. Alex's other Silver came from the Junior Team Kumite event where he teamed up with Jordan Hodges and Vishaal Dovedi. Their first round saw both Jordan and Vishaal secure wins. Jordan won his next round fight with Vishaal losing and Alex winning the remaining bout. The final saw Jordan quickly injure his foot and forfeit his match. Vishaal couldn't win his next match and the team settled for Silver on this occasion.  Aimee Sell, Sophie Roberts and Jade Lewis all took part in the U16yrs 3rd-1st Kyu Kata event but all finished outside the medal positions, as did Jordan, Vishaal and Santi who all performed in their respective categories. However, there was another Kata medal, this time bronze, for the U16yrs team of Aimee, Jodie and Sophie who performed Seienchin Kata and secured third place.

The individual Kumite events saw Dawn Lowry pick up a Silver in her category after going through a round-robin event. Dawn lost her opening match but secured victory in her next one as she opened up a decisive lead before her opponent was disqualified for successive warnings. Sophie Roberts and Jodie Miles both picked up Bronzes in their respective categories both narrowly losing out in their semi-final matches. JJ Burridge and

Dean Bannister both performed well in the Cadet division making the second round but lost out in the end, as did Jordan Hodges in his individual event. After three rounds, Jordan finally lost out just before the medal round. Little Ali Ayerman performed well in his event but failed to progress past the opening round. Another first casualty was Alex Sell who lost 8-6 in the U16 yrs event.

The other team events saw Ali, Jade and Sophie team up for the Junior team where they lost in the first round. Ali and Jade lost their opening round matches meaning Sophie unable to fight. However, the boys team of Jordan, Vishaal and Alex marched on to the finals. The girls teamed up for the Womens team events forming to teams; Jodie, Sophie and Amy forming one team and Jade, Santi and Dawn forming the other. The first womens team saw Jodie controversially lose her opening round match on the buzzer. Sophie impressively won her Match but unfortunately Amy lost out in the deciding match. The other Womens team suffered the same fate with Dawn losing the deciding match but both teams collected Bronzes for their efforts.

All in all it was a busy day and with the squad all over the place it was hard keeping up with their progress during the competition. They all did well, especially the not so experienced members. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the experience and will be looking forward to the next one.
