National Karate Association Open Championships

Sunday 6th March 2005 saw a squad from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travel to Newcastle-Under-Lyme in Staffordshire for the 1st National Karate Association Open Championships. The National Karate Association is SKDI's (Shorai Karate-Do International, our parent association) newest member and our squad were happy to support their 1st Open Karate Championships.

Aimee Sell continued her winning streak taking Gold in the Girls 12 Years and Under 3rd Kyu and above Kata event beating club mate Jodie Miles in the final. Jodie took runner-up spot in this event with Jade Lewis collecting a bronze for a club 123. Jodie then entered the Girls 15 Years and Under 1st Kyu and above Kata event and took Gold with Sophie Roberts securing silver after another all-Shuhari-Kai final. Alex Sell also collected a Kata Gold in the Boys 15 Years and Under 1st Kyu and above event. Even though he wobbled his final Kata was sufficient to take the win. The girls team of Aimee, Jodie and Sophie then secured another Gold in the team Kata event performing Jion Kata for a change to good effect.

The Kumite events saw Jodie Miles take bronze and Jade Lewis take silver in the Girls 12 Years and Under 3rd Kyu+ event. In a close match, Jade just edged out Jodie with a single point margin just before the end. Sophie collected a silver in the Girls 13-15 Years 3rd Kyu+ event feeling disappointed with some of the decisions that didn't go her way but we've all been there Sophie. She then braved the Girls 16-18 Years event and came away with a bronze for her efforts. Alex also collected bronze in the Boys 13-15 Years 3rd Kyu+ event after facing the eventual 6ft+ event winner and just losing 2-0 in a brave display. Lawrence Grosvenor was also keen to get in on the Gold medal act as he scooped top prize in the Boys 16-18 Years 3rd Kyu+ event. Lawrence then entered into the Adult Black Belt event and took bronze after getting caught out by the event winner but still put on a good show trying to get the points back. There was a final Gold for the girls Kumite team of Jade, Jodie and Sophie.

Shuhari-Kai would like to congratulate Chief Instructor Sensei Tony Bolton-Wood of the National Karate Association for organising an excellent competition.

Well done to the squad who came with 6 Golds, 4 Silvers and 5 Bronzes:

Lawrence Grosvenor, Jodie Miles, Jade Lewis, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
