MEOPHAM OPEN
Shuhari-Kai sent a squad of 9 to the Meopham Open in Kent on Sunday 13th March.
On arriving nice and early we set ourselves up and the competitors got changed and started warming up for the first event of the day which was junior mixed kata 15 years and below 6th to 4th kyu. Up first was Billie Lowry in her first ever Open competition went out and performed Pinan Nidan and scored 20.5. Jordan Hodges who was also in this category went up and performed Pinan Sandan scoring 20.6, next up Ali Ayerman and he performed Pinan Nidan too and scored a total of 20.0. Unfortunately with older competitors in their group they were unable to progress any further but well done to all of them.
Next up was the junior mixed kata 15 years and under 3rd to 1st kyu category. With Sophie Roberts and Jade Lewis in the same category with 25 others, Sophie was up first and performing Seienchin kata received the highest points of this event with 21.7. Jade up next and she also performed Seienchin and managed to score 21.1, this being just 0.2 points short of taking her through to the final rounds. After all the competitors had performed their chosen kata’s Sophie who had the most points at this time was then drawn against a another student and performed Bassai-Dai receiving 2 flags to 1 putting her through to the final against Matt Tansley. Sophie went up first and decided to perform a very good Seienchin kata again. Then Matt’s turn, and decides to perform super- enpi, unfortunately performing the kata wrong. But while Matt was doing his kata, and while he had his back turned away from the main judge a young boy ran across in front of the judge although this did not interfere with Matts performance the judges decided to let him re-perform his kata again. After a chat with his sensei and finding out how the ending of the kata went he then performed super-enpi again this time the correct way, at the end he received 2 flags to Sophie’s 1. This left Sophie with the silver medal, which she accepted gracefully.
Up next was Jodie Miles in the junior mixed kata 15 years and below Dan grades category. Jodie was first up, and scored an impressive 21.7 for her Bassai-Dai kata, thus putting her in second place behind Mitch Scotcher from Ishinryu by 0.1, after all the other 8 competitors had performed there katas. Jodie being the only girl to go through to the next round was put up against Mitch. Mitch performed an excellent Wanshu kata, so Jodie decided to perform Ni-Pi-Po even though she knew she would not win, she gave it her best but she was right and Mitch took all three flags. This now left Jodie to fight off for third place, up against a boy from Gojo-Ryu Jodie decided to now perform Seipei and earned herself 2 flags giving her the bronze medal.
Next up was team kata, with a new member for the day, the three girls, Jade, Jodie and Sophie, decided to perform Jion, which they done very well managing to keep in time all the way through and received 21.5 for their efforts. But unfortunately the Gojo-Ryu team, which included Matt Tansley, managed to score 0.1 more than our girls. This meant they had to settle for second place and the silver medal.
Now ready and rearing to go it was time for kumite, with new squad member Aryan Ayerman going up in his 1st ever-open competition. Aryan fought really well in the boys under 4’2” novice to 6th kyu category but was unfortunate to loose by 1-0. But nevertheless a good effort and well done.
Next up was Ali Ayerman in the boy’s 4’2” to 4’8” novice to 6th kyu category. Unfortunately for Ali he was drawn against local boy Jack Hayter but put up a good fight but after scoring a couple of mawashigeri’s he narrowly lost out by 4-6 but well done and keep going Ali. Also in the same category as Ali was Jordan Hodges or is it Flash Gordon. In went Jordan after winning gold the day before and still on a high, he took no prisoners in his first fight by winning 9-0. His next fight saw him drop a few points, but he still managed to win by 6-4. His next fight took him a little longer to get into but still managed to take the win 2-0, which took him into the finals and up against Jack Hayter. With both boys very evenly matched they both performed and fought very well with Jordan just losing 5-3, but taking the silver medal. Well done Jordan.
Next, it was another new squad member Andrew Ayerman. Andrew was in the boy’s 4’2” to 4’8” 5th kyu to Dan grades category. Andrew fought really well and managed to score a good gyak before the time was called winning his first fight 1-0, but unfortunately for Andrew he was then up against a more experienced fighter and lost his second fight 6-1. Well done Andrew it was a hard category for you.
Now it was time for the girls to take to the mats. With Billie Lowry in her first ever Open competition and in the girls under 4’2” novice to 6th kyu category she received a first round bye, she then went up and won her first fight 1-0, which put her into the finals. Billie fought very well and just managed to get two gyak’s in just before time and came away with the only gold medal of the day, won by a Shuhari-Kai student.
Up next were Sophie Roberts and Ellie Ayerman in the same category, girls over 5’2” 5th kyu to Dan grades. Sophie was called up first and against Kelly Cooney from T.K.A. Sophie was a bit concerned about this fight as Kelly had always beaten her, but she went in with a positive mind and won the fight 3-1. Ellie was then called up and after a few knocks, she managed to score and win the fight 2-0. Sophie was then called up again, but after receiving a few punches to the nose which weren’t penalised she lost the fight 5-4. This left Ellie now to fight again but could not quite manage to pull back enough points and lost 5-2, but this meant that both Sophie and Ellie came away with a bronze medal each.
Last up to fight were Jade Lewis and Jodie Miles both girls in the same category which was the girls 4’8” to 5’2” 5th kyu to Dan grades. Jodie and Jade received first round byes. Then Jade was called up against a girl who was a lot bigger and older, but Jade managed to keep her on her toes. But after being punched in the jaw not once but twice, and no warning given to the other girl, it ended up a draw at the end of time. With 30 seconds now put back on the clock, Jade tried hard to get a gyak or a kick but was unable to score, when the whistle went and time up again it was down to the judges. After a little chat the judges went back to their seats and made their decision which was that Jade lost 2 flags to 1. Well done Jade a hard fought fight. Jodie was next and she was called up against Kara Hopkins from Hyogendo. Kara managed to give Jodie the run around for the first few seconds of the match, then Jodie kicked Kara’s elbow and received her first bruise of the day. Then it was very close, with each girl managing to score points on each other, but Jodie caught Kara on the neck with a mawashigeri and got her first warning. Trying the same technique again she caught Kara in the same place giving Kara her extra point and taking the score to 4-3 just on the whistle.
And now for team kumite. With two teams going in this event. Sophie, Jodie and Billie chose to be shuhari-kai B. While Ellie, Jade and Jordan went in as Shuhari-Kai A. With team B, receiving a first round bye team A went in first. Jordan was first to fight and dominated the match winning 11-4. Up next for the team was Jade, Jade managed to hold her competitor to a draw of 4-4. This left it up to Ellie to win, but coming up against another competitor a lot more experienced than her Ellie lost 6-3, with both teams winning 1 fight each and drawing in another it all went down to points with our team winning 18-14, well done team. Team B was then called to the mat against 3 boys from Hyogendo. Billie took to the mat first, she put up a good fight but lost 10-4. Up next was Jodie against Ben Coward. After receiving a hard kick to the back, and two strong punches to the side, Jodie was getting hurt, the judges didn’t seem to think that Ben’s punches or kicks were excessive enough to be warned about but after another kick to the back Jodie got angry, when Ben decided to do a flying mawashigeri kick to Jodie’s back and receiving points for it Jodie decided to forfeit the match putting her safety first. This meant that Sophie did not need to fight as the other team was 2 fights up. After coming off the mat and taking a look at Jodie’s back there was a large bruise across it, after showing this to one of the judges he then agreed the kicks may have been slightly too hard. Team A then went up against the Hyogendo team that had just fought our other team. With Jordan up first he wasn’t going to let them get the better of him and managed the win 4-2, next up was Jade, she went up against Ben Coward too, (who Jodie pulled out against) and to the same fate Jade pulled out as well due to his excessive contact. With only Ellie left and spite her club mates telling her to pull out because of the way the boys were fighting. She decided to fight but coming up against Perry Dee she decided to carry on. Ellie took a lot of hard punches and kicks but still determined she carried on but lost 10-2, but this was enough to give Shuhari-Kai A the bronze medal.
After the event, the organiser came up to see Jodie, and to have a look at her back, after seeing the huge bruise, he then agreed that the kicks that she received were excessive, but because she got back on line he didn’t think it was necessary to penalise the other contestant, but he did say that a lesson had been learnt today, and that in the next event he would not put boys up against girls.
All in all Shuhari-Kai had a good day bringing home, 1 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronzes. Shuhari-Kai would like to thank sensei Steve Coleman for inviting them to his competition.
Squad for the day Ali Ayerman, Andrew Ayerman, Aryan Ayerman, Ellie Ayerman, Jordan Hodges, Jade Lewis, Billie Lowry, Jodie Miles & Sophie Roberts.
