Children's Regional Age Group Championships
On Saturday 12 March the first ever Children’s Regional Championships were held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield. The competition took place after the seniors had finished the kata section of the
EKGB Senior Nationals. The competing regions were Northern, Southern and Midlands Regions. The Southern Region had only entered one team for Kata, the boys team from Ishinryu consisting of Mitch Scother, Robert Clark and James Cornish. The boys blew away the competition to capture
the Regions first trophy and collect 6 points for first place (with 4 for second and 2 for third).
After the Kata events the kumite started with the boys 12-13 years age group. The team consisted of James Witt, Robert Clark,
Alex Sell, Conor Lynn and Ben Coward with James Steadman and Daniel Roche as reserves. Initially up against the Midlands Region, James took to the mat first and with 3 successive sanbons won his first fight with ease 9-0. Next up was Robert who fought with great enthusiasm and won
3-1 keeping the team on course for a decisive victory. Next up was Alex who at first was losing 2-0 but then came back dominating to win his fight 10-2. Conor was up next and narrowly lost 2-1 in a close match. The final team competitor up was Ben. Ben went out guns blazing but lost
1-9 as his competitor was twice his height, but with 3 wins under their belts they took their victory into the next round-robin match.
The next match was Southern v Northern Region, and as before James was up first. James opened up Southern’s account winning with
an impressive 5-2 win. Next up was Alex with a slight change in order. Alex didn’t disappoint as he who won 2-1 taking the team into a 2-0 lead. Ben making up for an earlier loss won the third fight 4-0 and Robert followed Ben this time. However, although Robert fought extremely
well he couldn’t connect with his opponent and lost 0-7. Lastly, Conor took to the mat and sealed a convincing display with a 2-1 win claiming another Gold for the region.
The Boys 14-15 years team secured Gold as did the Girls 14-15 years team. The only defeat suffered by the region was in the Girls 12-13 years team where they lost to the Northern team but still came away with Silver.
All the regions fought well all wanting to win the Championships, and in the end it was the Southern Region who won with a total of 28 points with the Northern Region on 22 points and Midlands on 15. Well done to all who took part. A great
start for Paul Simmons, Molly Sammuels and Tyrone Whyte who collected the team trophy with the biggest grins I’ve seen for a while.
