British Karate Federation International Open

First competition of the year and the squad of five did exceptionally well to come away with four medals. The British Karate Federation's International Open is always a hotly contested tournament with entries from Ireland, Norway, Slovakia and Egypt to name but a few making up the elite international opposition.

The weekend of 22-23 January 2005 saw the opening day's events start off with the Kata categories. Shuhari-Kai had three squad members competing in the kata events under the Shorai Karate Do International (SKDI) banner, our parent association. Jodie Miles competed in the Girls 12-13Yrs along with fellow squad member Sophie Roberts. Jodie lost out in the third round after two good displays of Bassai-Dai and Seienchin but Nipaipo kata was beaten 3 flags to 0. Unfortunately for Jodie, her winning opponent then went on to forget her kata in the next round ending Jodie's hopes of repechage. After receiving an opening round bye, Sophie performed Seienchin in round two to good effect but dropped out in the third round as the eventual event winner beat her 3-0. Sophie went into repechage but failed to progress into the medal positions.

Alex Sell was the other squad member competing in the kata events and his Boys 12-13yrs category was divided into two pools due to the large number of entries. Alex, competing in pool B, went out in round two after receiving a first round bye. Alex's Bassai-Dai was soundly beaten 3-0 by the eventual event winner which allowed Alex to compete in the repechage rounds. As Alex was in one draw of the pool, Alex had to perform four katas in quick succession without a break. He won 3-0 with Seienchin and followed it up with a 2-1 win with Nipaipo. Another 3-0 win with Chatanyara Kushanku and a final 2-1 victory with Annan saw Alex finally take a well earned bronze medal.

Alex's bronze medal wasn't the only one of the day as the girls entered the kumite events. The girls team event with Jodie, Sophie and Jade Lewis competing saw them narrowly beaten in the opening round as they lost following a 6-6 draw from Sophie, a 11-7 loss from Jodie and a 4-3 defeat to Jade. The individual events saw Jade lose out in her opening round 3-2, whilst Jodie lost out in round two 5-0 to the event finalist allowing her entry into the repechage rounds. Jodie made no mistakes this time and a few bruising rounds later came up trumps beating her opposition 5-4 and 4-0 to take bronze. Sophie didn't need repechage to claim her medal as she stormed through her rounds 3-1, 6-0, 8-0 and 7-0 dominating the event to make the finals. A close final saw Sophie eventually pick off her opponent and win the final 4-2 claiming her first international title. Well done.

The boys didn't fair as well as Alex teamed up with Robert Clark as a last minute replacement. Robert did well but lost out in the opening round of the team event. With only two fighters, they were eliminated but made repechage as they team they lost to went on to win the event. This time Alex went first and won his opening fight 3-1. Robert followed and after trailing 5-1 staged a remarkable comeback to bring the scores 6-5 in his favour. The last five seconds saw Robert penalised for avoiding fighting whilst trying to protect his lead and was awarded a one-point penalty against him. The score finished tied at 6-6 and that was enough to eliminate them again with a win and a draw and a loss from having no third fighter. Tuff luck guys but a good effort.

The second day's events had Alex Sell and Lawrence Grosvenor as the only squad members competing in the individual kumite events. Alex was up first and won his opening round fight against Vale Karate's Scott Paramore 7-1. Next saw against Ishinryu's Daryll Tyndall. Alex took an early lead but gave away penalty points as he was penalised for excessive contact and eventually disqualified following one too many warnings. Lawrence uncommonly lost out in the second round of the 75+KG Cadets event to the eventual event winner after winning his opening round 2-1. Lawrence then stepped up a gear in repechage coming through a number of tough rounds to earn himself a bronze medal.

Well done to all five squad members who attended making a good start to the year.

Squad: Lawrence Grosvenor, Jade Lewis, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Alex Sell.
