British Karate Federation National Youth Championships

Shuhari-Kai Karate Club has a new British National Champion, Aimee Sell, who took gold in the Girls Under 10 Years Kata event. Five squad members travelled to Sheffield for the British Karate Federation National Championships which were held over the weekend 11-12th June 2005. The majority of the squad was competing in the first days events with the exception of Sophie Roberts was competing on both days of the tournament.

The first squad members called into action were Jodie Miles and Jade Lewis both competing 12-13yrs Kata event. Jade, competing in her first British National Championships, failed to make it past the first round as she lost out 3 flags to nil after performing Seienchin. Jodie on the other hand took Bronze after coming back through repechage. Jodie initially won 3-0 with Bassai-Dai and followed it up with another 3-0 with Seipai. Jodie then lost the semi-final losing 2-1 after performing Nipaipo. In repechage Jodie secured bronze following a 3-0 win with Seienchin.

Also collecting a Bronze was Alex Sell in the boys 12-13yrs Kata event. Alex secured a 2-1 win with his opening Kata, Seienchin, but then lost the next round 3-0 after the judges decided his Bassai-Dai Kata was too slow. In repechage Alex performed Nipaipo followed by Annan Katas securing 3-0 wins with each and collecting the bronze medal.

Aimee Sell had only to perform two Katas following her first round bye to secure British Gold. Aimee performed Seienchin for her opening Kata securing a 3-0 win. The final saw her perform Nipaipo Kata taking another 3-0 win to finish on the top step of the podium. Sophie Roberts was unlucky in her Kata event after initially being awarded bronze. But due to a table error her medal was finally awarded to her opponent. Sophie initially performed Seienchin Kata securing the win but lost out in the next round with her Bassai-Dai Kata being beaten. In repechage Sophie performed Seipai to make the repechage final. Sophie performed Unshu with her opponent performing Seienchin. Her opponent was duly disqualified for repeating a Kata. However, this was a table error and her judges went back to vote on the two Katas awarding it against Sophie this time. Unlucky Sophie.

The Kumite events proved a little less fruitful as Alex lost out in the second round of his event and lost the repechage final after being disqualified. Jodie too lost out on a medal after losing the repechage final. Jade was also unlucky as she lost her opening Kumite round on the judges decision following a nil-nil score after 1 minute of extra time failed to break the deadlock. Sophie Roberts was the only one to medal in the Kumite events on day two. Sophie won her opening round but lost out 6-5 in her next round after one of her points was awarded and then retracted by a table official. Sophie came back strongly though through repechage to secure the Bronze medal that she so narrowly missed out on the day before.

Squad: Jade Lewis, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
