AMA International Championships

Shuhari-Kai Karate Club claimed a gold at both ends of the scale with our youngest and oldest competitors from the squad both claiming their International titles at the AMA International Championships held on 26-27th February 2005, in Nottingham. England squad member Lawrence Grosvenor continued his wining streak whilst competing in the 17-18 years Cadets Kumite fighting event. Lawrence came through three rounds beating international opposition to claim this prestigious title. At the other end of the scale, Aimee Sell claimed her second successive Gold after competing in the 9 years and under Kata event. Aimee performed Seienchin, Bassai-Dai and Seienchin Kata again to make the final scoring all three flags from the judges throughout. The final saw Aimee perform Nipaipo Kata and once again made a clean sweep of the judge's flags to secure her first AMA International title.

But they weren't the only medals won by the squad... three further medals, a silver and two bronzes were brought home by Jodie Miles and Jade Lewis. Jodie claimed a bronze in the girls 12-13 years Dan Grade Kata event after being knocked out in the third round by the eventual winner. Jodie received a first round bye, performed Bassai-Dai in round two for a 2-1 win but lost out 3-0 in round three after performing Annan Kata. Jodie went into repechage and secured the bronze after claiming a 3-0 victory with her Nipaipo Kata. Jodie then went one better picking up silver in the girls 10-12 years 40+ Kg Kumite event. A first round 4-0 win was backed up with a 5-1 second round victory. The semi-final saw Jodie claim a 2-0 win to make the final but Jodie suffered defeat in the final losing 4-1 and settling for the silver spot.

Jade Lewis claimed her bronze in the girls 10-12 years -35 Kg Kumite event. Jade narrowly lost her opening encounter 1-0 to the eventual finalist and therefore qualified for the repechage rounds. Jade then stepped up a gear and following an impressive 9-1 victory was taken to the wire in the bronze medal fight. The end of the 1.5 minute fight saw the scores tied a 3-3. One minute of extra time was allocated with the first to score the winner. Jade made sure she struck first to claim the extra point and the first of her International medals.

Also in action was Alex Sell who competed in the boys 12-13 years Dan Grade Kata event but he failed to gain a medal. Alex received a first round bye and then secured a 3-0 win with his Seienchin Kata. This was followed by another 3-0 win with Nipaipo. The semi-final saw Alex finally lose out as his Annan was beaten 3-0. Alex went into repechage but lost out 2-1 after performing Chatanyara Kushanku. Alex didn't compete in the Kumite events at this event as he attended the Southern Regional Squad selection and training session being held in Twickenham on the Sunday. See 'Cream of the Crop' article for how he got on.

The small squad of five did exceptionally well at the championships end the weekend with 2 Golds, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes between them.

Squad: Lawrence Grosvenor, Jade Lewis, Jodie Miles, Aimee Sell & Alex Sell.
