All British Children's Championships

Shuhari-Kai Karate Club took 8 students to the All British Futures Championships held in Dudley on Sunday 20th February 2005 and came home with a horde of silverware. They collected 6 golds and 1 silver between them. First gold of the day came from Aimee Sell in the Mixed Peewee 9yrs and under Kata event. Aimee performed Seienchin Kata scoring 6.3, 6.3 & 6.1 from the three judges beating her nearest rival by 0.2 and claiming the clubs first gold of the day. Next came Jodie Miles competing in the Mixed 10-12yrs 5th Kyu and above Kata category. Jodie performed Bassai-Dai Kata scoring 6.4, 6.4 & 6.4 from the three judges and once again a clear 0.2 margin saw her claim gold number two. Number three came from Alex Sell in the Mixed 13-15yrs 5th Kyu and above Kata category. Alex performed Chatanyara Kushanku Kata and his score of 6.5, 6.5 & 6.5 was enough to secure victory. Especially well done to Alex who recently turned 13 years old and was competing against much bigger and stronger individuals.

The golden trio then joined forces to compete in the Mixed 14yrs & Under Team Kata event. Competing against another eight teams, the trio made sure of a Kata clean sweep as the claimed gold with the last performance of the event. Performing Seienchin Kata, the judges scored them 6.4's across the board giving the a 0.2 point cushion. A special award was made by the organisers to the best Kata of the day and Jodie Miles won this prestigious honour and took away a marvelous figurine statute for her efforts.

The Kumite events proved a little tougher with Alex Sell out in the first round of the 13-15yrs boys over 5'2'' category. Alex was seriously up against it in this event and probably grateful of an early exit. Jodie Miles suffered a second round defeat losing by 1 point after dominating the round but giving away too many points towards the end. Jade Lewis found fighting a very small competitor difficult as she was penalised for face contact and then couldn't land any chudan Gyaks. JJ Burridge, David Wales and Dean Bannister all suffered early exits in the Boys 16-18yrs Cadet event. David and Dean did extremely well taking a few points but not enough to progress. JJ Was particularly unlucky as he dominated the fight but ended up losing 10-9 somehow. Still not quite sure how that one happened. Lawrence Grosvenor, recently back from the Junior and Cadets European Championships in Greece, made sure everyone knew why he is England's first choice over 80KG competitor as he secured gold in the Boys 16-18yrs Cadet Kumite fighting event. Lawrence came through four rounds securing victory with an impressive 7-0 victory in his last fight to secure the squads fifth gold of the day. The sixth was claimed by Jodie Miles in the Girls 10-12yrs Team event. The only silver of the day was for the boys 16-18Yrs Team Kumite event collected by John Burridge, David Wales and Dean Bannister. The boys put up a good show but lost their opening two fights in the final and had to settle for the runners up spot.

A special mention to Jade Lewis who was the only member not to gain a medal. Jade came 7th in the Mixed 10-12yrs 5th Kyu and above Kata category scoring 6.1, 5.9 & 5.8 from the three judges for her Jion Kata, a good performance from someone who only started competing late last year. Well done also to David Wales and Dean Bannister who we rarely see at competition and it was hard for them to jump in at the deep end. Well done to all.
