Golds Galore at EKKA Open

A small squad of five travelled to Ipswich on Sunday 23rd April 2005 to enter the EKKA open and all came away medal winners. Kata was first and Jordan Hodges was first up in the mixed 6th-4th Kyu event. Jordan performed Pinan Shodan and scored 7.0, 7.1 and 7.3 from the three judges totalling 21.4. After the remaining field had all performed their katas, Jordan was tied in third place with three other competitors but on count-back Jordan was denied the chance to try for the remaining bronze. Unlucky Jordan but a good kata.

Next up was Aimee Sell, Jade Lewis and Sophie Roberts all competing together in the mixed 3rd-1st kyu category. Strangely enough every single competitor in this category chose to perform Seienchin Kata making it nice and easy for the judges to compare. Jade was the first of the trio to compete and scored 7.1, 7.2 & 7.2 from the judges totalling 21.5 which would leave her in third position at the end of the category. Next up was Aimee and a score of 7.3, 7.4 & 7.4 from the judges totalling 22.1 put her firmly into the lead which she held on to the end. Sophie was the last of the trio to compete and she finished 0.1 behind Jade in 4th spot after scoring 7.1, 7.1 & 7.2 totalling 21.4. So a Gold for Aimee, Bronze for Jade and 4th for Sophie was a great result with Gojo's Mat Tansley taking the silver medal in this event.

The Dan grade event was only contested by Jodie Miles and Jodie's Bassai-Dai Kata scored 7.2, 7.3 & 7.4 from the judges which obviously gave her Gold. Jodie then collected another Gold along with Jade and Sophie as they teamed up for the team Kata event taking the highest score from the judges.

The Kumite events soon got underway and Jordan Hodges made up for his earlier disappointment by taking Gold in his event. So too did Sophie Roberts who like Jordan earlier finishing 4th in Kata made no mistakes in the Kumite event to take individual Kumite Gold. Jade Lewis picked up a Silver in her event with Jodie Miles rounding things off with an individual Bronze.

Squad: Jordan Hodges, Jade Lewis, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell.
