London Youth Games 2004

Sunday 20th June 2004 saw the Havering Karate squad take on the rest of London to compete for glory at the one of Europe's largest sporting events, the London Youth Games. Following the Havering games, the squad was selected to represent their borough and compete against London's finest. Representing Havering in the Girls Kata was Jodie Miles and Leigh Reed. Leigh made it through to the 2nd round but Jodie secured a bronze for the squad as she came through the repecharge after being beaten by the eventual winner. The two Kata boys did well too as Daniel Clark came through repecharge to claim bronze after he was also beaten by the eventual winner. Alex Sell went one better and made the finals but had to settle for silver as his Kata was beaten 4 flags to 1.

In the Girls Kumite events, little Lucy Peppercorn, in her first Youth Games, took the top spot as she stormed to victory in Girls U35kg event. Lucy did brilliantly and looked unstoppable throughout the day. In the U40kg event, Jodie Miles secured her second medal of the games as she overcame the opposition to take the honours in the repecharge playoffs to gain bronze. The U45kg event saw Claire Page and Sophie Roberts both competing. Sophie and Claire met in the semi-finals with Sophie taking the victory. Sophie went on to take gold beating an opponent nearly 3 years older in the final which proved to be a real nail-biter with Sophie coming from behind to win. Unfortunately for Claire, she failed to gain bronze after losing out in the final round of the repecharge. Another medallist was Lauren McCarthy in the U50kg event. Lauren fought superbly all day but couldn't quite overcome her opponent in the semi-final and had to settle for bronze after securing victory in the repecharge. Another medal for the squad was won by Leigh Reed as she did brilliantly in the 70'skg event but like she failed to overcome her opponent in the final and had to settle for silver.

The boys Kumite events saw their fair share of medals too as Alex Middleton secured a bronze in the U40kg event with Robert Clark taking the silver. Robert fought well but he narrowly lost out in the very close final. The U45kg event saw Daryl Tyndall and Alex Sell both competing together. Daryl was just pipped for bronze in the dying seconds of his repecharge final, still not sure how he lost as he was in total control up until that point. Alex made up for Daryl's disappointment as he secured gold in the event and secured his second medal of the games. Eventhough he came from behind after dropping the first point he never looked in any real danger. Another finalist was Mitchell Kiel but he had to settle for silver eventhough he looked devastating on the day and the more likely to win but just got caught and couldn't pull it back. The other boys competitors were JJ and Wayne Burridge. Both went out in the opening rounds after narrowly losing by a single point.

Overall the squad did themselves and their borough proud. The overall borough scores were not available as the competition finished but both the boys and girls teams are hoping for a top three placing. The site will be updated when the information becomes available. Havering borough coach, Richard Burridge, would like to thank all the competitors who took time out to represent their borough. Well done!!!
