Wado-Kai Open Championships

Six Shuhari-Kai students travelled to Reading to take part in the Wado-Kai Open Karate Championships on Sunday 23rd May. The squad came home with 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze. Lawrence Grosvenor maintained Shuhari-Kai's record of winning a gold in every competition this year by picking up the only Gold in his individual Kumite event. After his first round bye, Lawrence stormed through the rounds winning 9-1, 6-2. Lawrence's semi-final opponent pulled out due to injury leaving Lawrence to take the gold following a 2-0 win. Lawrence followed up on his gold by securing a silver in the team Kumite event after teaming up to form a two man team. Unfortunately, after drawing in the final, they had to settle for silver as they had no third fighter.  Jodie Miles also captured a Silver in her Kumite event after coming through three rounds with a bye, 1-0 and 3-2 victories. Jodie lost out in the final 7-1 to a much older competitor so silver was an excellent result for her. Shuhari-Kai's other medal came from Alex Sell who settled for bronze. Alex won his opening fight 5-0 and followed it up with a 3-2 victory. In the semi-final, it went into extra time after the scores were drawn 2-2. Unfortunately Alex was just pipped to the punch and had to bow out. Our other fighters did well but bowed out in the opening round with Vishaal Dovedi losing 3-0, Sophie Roberts uncharacteristically losing 5-3 and Jordan Hodges beaten by Jack Hayter who went on to win the category.

The Kata events were long events with a large numbers of competitors competing. Jodie Miles and Alex Sell both did exceptionally well as they eventually lost in the quarter final rounds. Alex received a first round bye and performed Enpi in round two winning all 3 flags. The third round saw Alex with another unanimous decision after performing Chatanyara Kushanku and followed it up with another in round four for Bassai-Dai. The quarter final saw Alex finally drop out after his Nipaipo was beaten 2 flags to 1. Jodie also had an excellent run winning 3 flags to 0 in the first round after performing Seienchin Kata. Round two saw Jodie perform Nipaipo Kata and secure another 3-0 win. Jodie's Bassai-Dai saw her through to the next round with a 2-1 decision and another 2-1 decision in the fourth round for her Seipei ensured she reached the quarter finals. Like Alex, Jodie lost out 2 flags to 1 after her Nipaipo was just pipped. A great display from both of them considering the category was 11-15 years. Sophie Roberts, also competing in the same category won a 3 flags to 0 win with her opening Kata Seienchin in the first round. Unfortunately for Sophie, she lost in the next round after her Bassai-Dai was beaten. Jordan Hodges and Vishaal Dovedi both entered their respective Kata events. Jordan performed Pinan Shodan whilst Vishaal performed Pinan Sandan. Both boys narrowly lost out failing to make it into the next round. The Wado Kata section was entered into by Alex, Jodie and Sophie but all dropped out in the third round. The trio then entered the Team Kata event and dropped out in round two losing 3 flags to 0.

The Wado-Kai Open was well attended with approximately 650 competitors taking part. The event was well run with the organisers keeping all the mats busy. The inclusion of repecharge for each event did prolong some events but at least it gave the competitors a fair chance of a medal. Shuhari-Kai would like to congratulate Wado-Kai on a good competition.

Squad: Vishaal Dovedi, Lawrence Grosvenor, Jordan Hodges, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell.
