TKA International Open Championships

A small contingent of five from Shuhari-Kai attended the TKA International Open Championships on the 7th November 2004. The competition was being held a the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, a local venue for the club, and that allowed some of the other junior squad members to attend whilst four of the main squad attended the England Southern Regional training session in Twickenham.

As ever the Kata events kicked off the proceedings with the events being judged on a points scoring system by three judges. Up first was Jordan Hodges in the Under 16yrs 6th-4th Kyu category. Jordan performed Pinan Shodan and scored a creditable 20.2 which would leave him just outside the final cut for the final round. Next saw Vishaal Dovedi, Jade Lewis and Aimee Sell all competing in the Under 16yrs 3rd-1st Kyu category. 11 yrs old Jade, who's fairly new to the squad and competition performed a competent Jion Kata scoring 20.2 from the judges. Unfortunately for Jade, this score wasn't high enough to see her through to the final round. 10 yrs old Vishaal took to the mat next and his performance of Pinan Godan scored 20.3. Like Jade though, this score wasn't high enough to make the final cut. Last up was 9yrs old Aimee. Aimee showed why she's one of the top competitors in her class and a star in the making as she scored 21.7 for her performance of Seienchin Kata easily making the final cut. The final saw Aimee perform her second Kata, Nipaipo, scoring 21.9 from the three judges. That score was good enough for Aimee to secure third place and Bronze for the squad. Aimee was only beaten by 0.1 by a Maltese competitor for silver with Gojo's England National Champion Mat Tansley taking the honours in this prestigious event. Well done Mat and Aimee.

Following on from the Kata  events, the Kumite matches got underway with a stunning performance by Jordan Hodges who finally matched his potential to take the Silver after losing out to very experience Jack Hayter in the final. Jordan started brightly winning his opening match 8-1 with 3 Mawashigeri kicks and 2 Gyakuzukis punches to stun his opponent. The next round saw no letup as Jordan continued to dominate with another impressive 8-3 victory scoring 2 sanbons (3 point head kicks) along the way. The semi-final next and things hotted up as the competition became tougher. But Jordan held firm and saw out his opponent taking the win 5-3. The final saw Jordan up against one of the best in his class, Jack Hayter. After opening the scoring with a lovely Mawashigeri kick, Jordan couldn't hold onto the lead as Jack upped the tempo and finally won the match 9-2. This was a great result for Jordan who has just missed out in the past but finally realised the potential he possesses. If Jordan keeps competing, he'll certainly be a contender for a National title at some stage.

Also competing in was Vishaal Dovedi and he won his opening round match 1-0 with a striking Gyakuzuki. The second round match saw Vishaal and his opponent take it into extra time as the scores remained 0-0 at the final whistle. Unfortunately for Vishaal, his opponent just pipped him to the punch to take the victory. Little Ali Ayerman was up against it in his opening round and lost 9-2 to a more experience opponent. Abigail Gee also suffered a first round exit after taking her match into extra time. Like Vishaal before her, she lost out to a quicker punch and had to make an early exit. Abigail has come on leaps and bounds becoming a medal contender but this was an obvious disappointment for her but also an experience she will surely learn from.

Without the regulars of England squad member Lawrence Grosvenor and Southern England squad members Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell missing whist undertaking Southern England squad training, they represented their club well with Chief Instructor Richard Burridge extremely proud of the way they performed on the day.

Squad: Ali Ayerman, Vishaal Dovedi, Abigail Gee, Jade Lewis and Aimee Sell.
