Shuhari-Kai Summer Camp 2004      Everyone had a great time at the summer camp held at Coombe Haven in Hastings. The weather was good, the training was great and the students fantastic. There was lots to do at the camp, evening entertainment, arcades and swimming for the kids and of course Karate training. The weeks training culminated in the Kumite competition followed by the presentation of the medals for the Kumite and earlier Kata competition. The grading presentation was also conducted with the three new Black Belts receiving their certificates.    The training was excellent and all the students worked hard as many were being graded for their next belt. Tuesday saw the Kata competition take place with the little ones performing great Katas, little stars of the future. The gradings took place on Thursday starting with the lower grades and culminating in the Black Belt gradings in which JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles and Alex Sell were all successful in becoming 1st Dans. This was a particular poignant moment for Sensei Richard Burridge, as his own son JJ, became a Black Belt and both Jodie and Alex became his first ever Junior Black Belts.  Friday was Kumite competition and presentation day with a chance for the students to let off some steam.    All the students who passed their gradings did extremely well and those that just missed out are clearly knocking on the door. Little Lia Bannister was double graded to Red which was great as she's only six.  Sarah Fry passed her Yellow and she hasn't been going for long either. Six year old Billie Lowry is whizzing through her grades now as she became an Orange belt. Ellie Ayerman and Abigail Gee both passed their Purple and passing their 3rd Kyu Brown was big James Mount, workaholic Luke Bannister and Amir 'the Scud' Ayerman. 2nd Kyu Brown passes was obtained by Stewart Miles and Amy Roberts leaving the final gradings to JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles and Alex Sell who now enter the Black Belt hall of fame. The students were brilliant during the gradings as they kept the noise to a minimum and you could here a pin drop during the Black Belt gradings, except during the physical exercises where the crowd really got behind the students to encourage them. After the one-on-one fighting, the three students had to take on one, then two and then a third fighter and all got stuck in, to the roaring crowds pleasure. It was a brilliant spectacle to watch and one that will stick in the memories of all who were there.    The spectators and parents all enjoyed the camp especially Pat Miles who not only entertained us on stage with husband Len along with Mark & Debbie Sell and Richard & Luc Burridge, but also got a drenching in the water fight not only from the kids but from Luke's dad, Steve Bannister. Watch out next year as revenge is sweet...    All the students and parents, grand parents and friends would like to thank Sensei Richard Burridge, Ron Bruce and Steve Edwards for their efforts during the camp and all the preparations that go with it. Well done.
