North East Essex Karate Championships

The trip to Clacton proved fruitful once again for the 5 members of the Shuhari-Kai squad who set off at 7.00 in the morning on Sunday 7th March to compete in the North East Essex Karate Championships. 5 medals were picked up from the event - 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes. The turn out wasn't as high as expected after a number of other competitions clashed which meant a number of categories were merged together. But still approximately 150 competitors turned out to compete.

Competing in the 10-12 yrs 4th Kyu and below Mixed Kata event, Luke Bannister was the first of our squad to gain a medal. Drawn 'Red' to go first, Luke performed Pinan Sandan in the first round and secured a 3 flags to 0 victory. In round two, Luke's performance of Pinan Shodan gained him another 3-0 decision. The third round saw Luke through to the final after gaining a 2-1 victory. In the final, Luke performed Pinan Sandan once again but up against a very experienced competitor, Luke lost the decision 3 flags to 0. An excellent result for Luke who gained his first Kata medal in open competition.

Next up in the Mixed 10-12 Yrs, 3rd Kyu and above Kata event was Jodie Miles, Alex Sell and Sophie Roberts. Alex was up first and immediately up against tough opposition opted to take no chances and performed Chatanyara Kushanku Kata taking all 3 flags. Jodie was up next and her Seienchin Kata also secured a 3 flags to 0 decision. Sophie was the last to get underway from the trio and her Seienchin saw her into the second round too after securing a 2-1 decision. The second round saw Alex up first again, and his Bassai-Dai Kata secured him a 2 flags to 1 victory into the next round. Jodie also booked her third round place after yet another 3-0 win for her performance of Seipai Kata. Sophie joined her team mates into the next round after a 3 flags to 0 victory for her Jion Kata. The third round (quarter finals) saw Alex gain a 2-1 victory for his Enpi Kata with Jodie joining him after her Bassai-Dai Kata gained her a 3 flag unanimous decision. Unfortunately for Sophie, her Bassai-Dai Kata was just pipped at 2 flags to 1 leaving her just outside the medal  positions. The semi-finals saw team mates Alex and Jodie drawn together yet again and this time it was Alex who progressed into the finals after they both performed Nipaipo Kata with Alex taking 2-1 win. The final saw Alex's Seienchin Kata beaten 3-0 leaving him with the silver medal for is efforts with Jodie gaining the bronze.

JJ Burridge was the last to compete in the Kata events but his exploits in the Mixed 14-15 yrs 3rd Kyu and above event was shot lived  as his Bassai-Dai Kata was beaten 3 flags to 0 in the first round.

The Kumite events kicked off next with Luke Bannister first up in the Boys 10-11 yrs under 50Kg event. Luke suffered from an early exit losing 2-0 after putting up a brave display. Unfortunately, Luke was unable to add to his medal tally on the day. Next up saw Jodie Miles compete in the Girls 10-11 Yrs Open weight Kumite event. Competing against much heavier opposition, Jodie went out in the second round losing 5-3 but put together some excellent combinations to almost take the win. Unfortunately, she just lost the decision on 2 Gyakuzuki punches which she was adjudged to have scored second to her opponent. JJ Burridge also failed to progress to the medal stages after he lost his opening bout 4-0 to a very experienced competitor. JJ has fought this opponent before and has lost 8-0, so this time JJ fought well and held the score to 4-0 showing a great improvement on his part.

Sophie Roberts was placed in a round robin event with 3 other competitors in the Girls Open weight 13-15yrs category. Sophie lost her first fight 1-0 and also her second 5-2 but made amends in her last fight securing a 1-0 win securing a bronze medal for her efforts.

Last up for the squad was Alex Sell competing in the merged 10-11 and 12-13 yrs under 50kg boys event. Alex won his first fight 5-0 and went on to win his next round fight 3-0. The semi final round saw Alex secure victory with a 1-0 win. After the razzmatazz of the team events, the Kumite finals were held. Alex and his opponent were second to take centre stage and after a cagey minute-and-a-half neither had scored. One minute of extra time commenced with the first one to score wins. After a few seconds, Alex launched the decisive blow into his opponent to take the victory and Gold medal for the squad.

Five medals from five competitors was a good result considering many of them were competing in higher categories than they would normally compete in due to the merger of some categories.

Squad: Luke Bannister, JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles, Alex Sell and Sophie Roberts.
