Smiles for Miles at Mushindo Wado-Kai

SquadGolden girl Jodie Miles secured her second Kata gold in two weeks at the 3rd Mushindo Wado-Kai Kata championships following the English International Karate Organisation Championships the week before. A squad of four travelled to Wolverhampton on Sunday 1st February 2004 and came home with one individual gold and silver and one team silver.

Aimee SellFirst up from the squad was the youngest member, 8yr old Aimee Sell. Just coming back from an eye injury, she was determined to make her mark in the mixed 9yrs and under event. Aimee stared well receiving a bye for the first round and opening her account with her strongest Kata Seienchin in the second round. Aimee took all three judges flags and proceeded into round three. The third round (semi-finals) saw her perform Ni-Pai-Po Kata and make the finals by scoring a two-flags to one victory. Unfortunately Aimee lost the final after her Jion Kata failed to win any flags but she did extremely well to bring home the silver trophy.

Sophie RobertsNext up saw Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts both compete in the Girls 10-12yrs event. Sophie won her first round match winning all three flags for Seienchin Kata but failed to progress in the next round as her Bassai-Dai Kata was beaten by the one of the finalists. This left the door open for Sophie to compete in the repo-charge. Sophie performed Jion in the first round and progressed with a three flags to nil win. The next round saw Sophie just miss out on a bronze medal as her performance of Kushanku Kata lost two flags to one.

Jodie MilesIt was a better story Jodie who won her first round match winning all three flags for Seienchin Kata. Her Seipai Kata secured all three flags again in the second round and moved Jodie into the semi-finals. Jodie performed Bassai-Dai in the semi’s and made the final with a two flags to one victory. Out to avenge her team mates defeat, Jodie performed a stunning Ni-Pai-Po Kata beating her rivals difficult Chatanyara Kushanku Kata two flags to one bringing home gold and claiming her second title of the year.

Alex SellLast up for the squad was Alex Sell. Like Jodie the week before, Alex had secured gold in Kata to become international champion and so was a clear favourite to add this title to his growing list. Unfortunately, after cruising through his first round winning all three flags for his Enpi Kata, Alex lost the next round two flags to one as his Seienchin Kata was beaten. There is always some strange decisions in competition, and unfortunately it was Alex’s turn to be stunned. No more to say on that subject...!

Team KataThe last event of the day saw the squad enter into the Under 16’s Mixed Team Kata event. A last minute change saw 8yr old Aimee Sell replace Alex to join team mates Sophie Roberts and Jodie Miles in this tough event. Up against older competitors the team selected Seienchin as their chosen Kata to perform throughout the event. The event was large and split into two pools and competing in pool A, they received a bye for the first round. The second round saw them into the quarter-finals with a two flags to one victory. Another two flags to one victory saw the team make the semi’s. Up against a well rehearsed team the all girls team pulled out all the stops and won through to the final with a three flags victory. The final saw them up against the winners of pool B who were much older than our squad and obviously much more rehearsed. The outcome was inevitable loosing to a better team on the day but still proud to secure silver for their efforts. What made this all the more amazing was that the team hadn’t spent hours and hours practising, in fact they had only practised 30 minutes before the event which demonstrates how good they are individually.

So to come away with one gold and two silvers from a small squad of four was a great effort. Well done.

Squad: Jodie Miles, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell and Sophie Roberts.
