Mushindo Wado Kai National Championships

Following on from their trip to Wales the previous week when they each came home with a medal, the squad repeated their feat the following week at the Mushindo Wado Kai National Championships when they each came home with more medals to add to their growing collection. The trip to Wolverhampton on the 21st November proved fruitful from the start as Aimee Sell, competing in one of the first events, the mixed 10yrs and under Kata, captured a bronze. Aimee won through to the semi-final without dropping a flag but then lost out 2 flags to 1 just before the final. Aimee then had to compete in repechage before capturing the bronze and Shuhari-Kai's opening medal.

Next up was Alex Sell competing in the boys 11-15yrs Kata event. Alex came through 5 rounds to make it into the final guaranteeing himself a medal. Alex performed Chatanyara Kushanku in the final but lost out 2 flags to 1 settling for silver. The girls 11-15 yrs event saw Jade Lewis, Sophie Roberts and Jodie Miles all competing together. Sophie was up first and suffered a first round defeat after her Seienchin Kata was beaten. Jade was next to perform and her Jion took her into the next round with a 2-1 victory. Unfortunately, Jade lost out in round two as her Bassai-Dai was beaten. Jodie was last up and after a 1st round Bassai-Dai win, went out to the eventual winner in the next round. This left Jodie in repechage and she came through 3 more rounds to capture bronze and the first of her many medals.

Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts and Aimee Sell then teamed up for the team Kata event. The teams were split into four groups of four and the girls won their group to make the final group of four. They lost out in the final group but eventually gained a bronze through repecharge. With four medals from Kata it was onto the Kumite sections next.

The Girls 11-14 U45KG event saw Jade Lewis and Jodie Miles both competing. Both girls got an opening round bye and both girls lost out in the next round with Jade losing 5-0 and Jodie losing 6-3. Jodie, however, made repechage and came through 6-0 and 5-0 to win another bronze to add to her tally. The Girls 11-14 U50KG saw Sophie Roberts emulate Jodie's feat of gaining bronze through repecharge after just failing to make the final after harshly being disqualified for excessive contact in her semi-final bout. The three girls then teamed up for the 11-14 team event. The open fight saw Sophie secure a 5-1 which was followed by Jodie taking a 6-1 win and victory for the team. The next round saw them through to the finals as their opposition pulled out of the semis. The final saw Sophie take a 4-1 with Jodie only managing a 4-4 tie. This left Jade to compete but Jade lost out 6-0 meaning the team had to settle for silver narrowly losing on points.

Alex Sell lost out in the third round of the Boys 11-14 U50Kg event after winning 4-0 and 3-0 in his first two rounds. Alex lost 6-2 in the third round after finding his opponent too tall and elusive for him. Alex teamed up with Matt Tansley for the team event but with only two fighters went out in the opening round.

Lawrence Grosvenor secured a gold in the 15-17yrs Cadets Kumite. Lawrence received a 1st round bye and went on to win 3-0 in the semi-finals. The final saw Lawrence secure an impressive 9-0 victory and his first gold of the day. His next gold came in the team event as he teamed up with fellow competitors to win the Senior team event.

Well done all who competed.

SQUAD: Lawrence Grosvenor, Jade Lewis, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell and Alex Sell.
