Golds Galore at Malta International Open Championships

Aimee performing SeienchinShuhari Kai representatives, Aimee & Alex Sell and Lawrence Grosvenor made the trip to Malta to compete in the 2nd Malta International Open Championships held at Dingli, Malta on 17th July 2004. Representatives from a number of countries including Germany, Poland, Holland, converged to compete in the second open championships to be held on the Maltese Islands.

John, Aimee & Alex with their Kata trophiesHaving won double gold at last years event, 12 year old Alex Sell was keen to retain his titles but had now moved up to the 12-15 yrs Kata event and the 12-13yrs Kumite. The Kata event was judged on points this year and with the top five highest points scorers going through to the final round. Alex performed Bassai-Dai for his opening Kata receiving 7.1, 7.1 & 7.2 from the three judges narrowly leading the rest of the field. Up first in the final round, Alex set the pace as his final Kata, Chatanyara Kushanku, received 7.2, 7.2 & 7.2 from the judges. This score remained unbeaten as Alex retained his Kata title receiving Gold. As Alex had moved up a category, it was left up to 9 year old Aimee Sell to compete in the 11 yrs and under Kata event. Due to the number of entrants, it was deemed that a single round should suffice, so Aimee performed Seienchin Kata and scored 7.2, 7.2 & 7.3 from the three judges. Like Alex, this score remained unbeaten and Aimee collected the U11's Kata title.

Alex being coached by John and LawrenceAfter the remainder of the Kata events and the weapons Kata events, the Kumite commenced. Up first was Alex who was competing in the Boys 12-13 yrs Kumite was up first and got off to a flying start winning his opening bout 11-1. The next round saw Alex take a comfortable lead before dropping a few points towards the end but secured the victory with a 6-3 win. Now in the final, Alex took total control having watched his opponents fights. Alex quickly countered his opponents attacks and took the victory and title with a 10-0 score line. Last up from the small squad was Lawrence Grosvenor competing in the 16-19 Cadets event. Lawrence made a great opening start winning his first round fight 10-3. The next round (semi-finals) saw Lawrence pull out an unbeatable lead taking the victory 6-3 against a tough opponent. The final saw Lawrence finally succumb as he notched up a rare defeat losing 4-9. Slightly disappointed with Silver, Lawrence made up for it when he teamed up with representatives from Toyakwai for the team event in which they easily secured Gold against their opponents.

Lawrence getting stuck inThe 2nd Malta Championships were another great success and the Maltese students and competitors must be congratulated on their behaviour and friendliness throughout the championships once again. The small Shuhari-Kai squad finally came home with 4 Golds and 1 Silver from the championships which was a fantastic result for them. A big thanks to Toyakwai for their support during the championships and cheering on our squad too and well done to their squad members who competed. Well done also to Jonathan Mottram who not only won his Kata event to become Maltese Open International Champion, but also for coaching Alex and Aimee in their Kata events and coaching Alex to victory in his Kumite.
