Ishinryu Summer Invitational

Saturday 15th May 2004 saw 11 members from Shuhari-Kai attend the Ishinryu Summer Invitational held at Hornchurch Sports Centre, Harrow Lodge. The competition turned out to be an extremely large event with 40 competitors on average in the peewee categories. Shuhari-Kai brought home 4 Gold's, 2 Silvers & 3 Bronzes which was a vast improvement on last year when we brought home 2 silvers and 2 bronzes. The squad also had a number of quarter final places and 4th places which shows how much the squad has improved within the year. All-in-all this was one of Shuhari's best displays given the categories and level of competition.

Jordan Hodges had an excellent competition losing out in the quarter finals in the Kumite event after storming through three rounds, 3-0, 7-1 & 8-1. Eventhough Jordan was on top he was disqualified for contact after 3 warnings. Had it not been for the initial double warning, Jordan would have gone on to make the finals. Jordan also competed in the Kata event but failed to make round two, unlike Terry Moorton who secured all three flags for Pinan Nidan in the opening round. Unfortunately Terry failed to make round three but Terry is quick to pick things up and did well in his first Ishinryu competition. Samuel Gee also made round two in his Kata event along with Luke Bannister but both boys lost out in round three. But on to the Kumite event for them and they were joined by Vishaal Dovedi. Sam Gee fought well in his opening round fight and pushed his opponent back continuously but was caught out by some Gyaks and lost 6-1. Vishaal had one of his best performances making the quarter finals after winning 4-2 & 5-2. Vishaal was unlucky in the next round and lost 6-0 but kept pushing for the points. If Vishaal was unlucky, Luke Bannister must of been cursed. Luke stormed through his rounds 9-1 & 9-0 and followed it up with a quarter final win. Luke was 5-2 up on his opponent when he received a heavy blow to this jaw. The medics were concerned about Luke's injury and pulled him from the rest of the competition after his opponent was disqualified. As there was no joint third places awarded, Luke had to settle for fourth eventhough Luke would have almost certainly gone on to win. This was the best we've seen Luke fight and is bound to win a hatful of medals if he keeps this up.

Alex Sell had a terrific day too as he secured silver in the Kumite event beating some larger opponents on the way but lost out to Mitchell Keil in the finals failing to beat Mitchell's Gyak. In the 1st Kyu+ Under 15yrs kata event, Alex, being the youngest and smallest, was up against some renowned competitors. Alex won 3 flags to 0 for his Bassai-Dai Kata in the opening round and then 2 flags to 1 for Enpi Kata in the following round. The semi-finals saw Alex also win 2-1 for Nipaipo Kata against Mitch Scotcher and in the finals Alex, performing Chatanyara Kushanku Kata lost 2 flags to 1 against Chris Harris performing Unsu. A great result for Alex and more than expected given the field.

No such drama for Jodie Miles as she stormed her way to GOLD in her Kata event not dropping a single flag to secure her medal. Jodie's Kumite event wasn't quite as rewarding as she lived up to her Bulldog nickname and got herself disqualified in the opening round. Her Kata event made up for her Kumite loss though, as Jodie performed faultless Seienchin, Seipai and Nipaipo Katas to win the squad first gold of the day. Can't really improve on that can you! Snapping closely at her heels was Sophie Roberts who came through to take third place. Sophie performed Seienchin Kata followed by Bassai-Dai Kata taking all flags en-route. The semi-finals saw Sophie loose out on the chance to make the finals after her Jion Kata was beaten but she came back strong in the third place play-off as she secured a 3 flag victory for her Seienchin Kata. If her Kata results was good Kumite result was brilliant as she overcame much older and bigger opponents in the over 5'1'' under 16 years event. Sophie stormed through her opening round fight 10-2 and followed this up with a 7-2 win. The semi final saw her against an opponent 16 years old on the day and much bigger. But Sophie took no prisoners beating her 7-4 and then win the final 4-0. Well done Bandit. Abigail Gee picked up an excellent bronze in her Kumite event. Abs won her opening fight 4-0 and then won her next fight 3-0. The semi-final saw Abigail drop her first points as she lost 6-3 but secured third place as her opponent for the play-off was ruled out of the event after picking up an injury in the round before. A good result for Abigail surely more medals to come.

The Cadets didn't miss out on the action with JJ Burridge  picking up a bronze for his Kata event. JJ Then went on to win his Kumite event after competing in a round-robin event against two other opponents. JJ won both his fights to secure GOLD but picked up a foot injury on the way. Let's hope it's not too serious Buddha.  Last but certainly not least was Lawrence Grosvenor who went through two rounds to make the final. Lawrence wasn't firing on all cylinders in the early rounds but did enough to pinch the wins from his opponents. The final saw Lawrence relax and begin to warm up as he went out and won in emphatic style. Well done Big G to keep you're winning streak going.

This was an excellent squad performance with many individual personal best performances being made. What more could you ask for. Keep up the good work.

Squad: Luke Bannister, JJ Burridge, Vishaal Dovedi, Abigail Gee, Samuel Gee, Lawrence Grosvenor, Jordan Hodges, Jodie Miles, Terry Moorton, Sophie Roberts & Alex Sell.
