Havering Games Karate Competition

The Karate competition of the Havering Games took place on Saturday 8th May at Hornchurch Sports Centre. Despite being publicised and all local clubs informed, the turnout was disappointing. This led to a number of Kumite categories being merged with some participants fighting in higher weight categories than they would normally do.

The Girls 10-13 Years Kata event was first event to get underway with 7 competitors competing for the Havering Champion title. This event saw Shuhari-Kai students, Abigail Gee, Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts all competing against one-and-other. Jodie was the first of the students up and performed Seienchin Kata followed by Sophie also performing Seienchin Kata. Last up was Abigail who performed Pinan Shodan Kata. The four competitors with highest scores from the first round went into the final round to perform a different Kata for the final. Jodie was one of the four and performed Nipaipo Kata. Sophie was our other competitor to make the final four and she performed Bassai-Dai Kata. The girls did well with Jodie winning the event and Sophie as runner-up.

The boys 10-13 Years Kata saw 8 competitors battle it out for the title. Alex Sell, Samuel Gee, Aaron Relf and Luke Bannister were all competing in this event together. First up from the Shuhari-Kai quartet was Alex who performed Bassai-Dai Kata. Next up was Samuel who performed his favourite Kata Pinan Shodan. Aaron was next to take center stage and performed Pinan Sandan. Last up was Luke who performed Pinan Sandan Kata and that proved good enough to earn him a place in the last four along side Alex. The final round saw Luke perform Pinan Shodan and Alex perform Chatanyara Kushanku. Alex finished as the event winner with Luke  picking up a well deserved bronze.

The Boys 14-17 Years Kata event had only three competitors and all three had to perform two Katas. JJ Burridge was Shuhari-Kai's only representative and JJ secured the runner-up spot after his displays of Bassai-Dai and Enpi Katas.

The Kumite events were next underway and as already mentioned, the weight categories were mixed up so everyone got a fight. This meant that although not everyone won medals in the events, they could secure medals within their individual weight categories. The first Girls event saw Jodie Miles with two other competitors compete in a round-robin event. Jodie won her first fight 7-6 snatching the winning point on the bell and went on to win the event after securing her second win 12-8. The next girls event saw Claire Page and Sophie Roberts competing together. First up was Claire secured her place in the final with a 7-2 victory. Sophie made it a Shuhari double as she also booked her final spot after a convincing 8-1 win. The question was who would come out on top between Claire and Sophie...? An entertaining final saw Sophie win the event beating Claire 9-3. The next event saw Abigail Gee compete but she failed to make the finals as she lost her opening fight 6-0.

The Boys Kumite events started with Aaron Relf in the first event along with one other competitor. Aaron did well but lost his fight 9-4. The next event saw Alex Sell and Samuel Gee battle against eachother with Alex coming out on top with a 8-0 victory. Luke Bannister was up next but couldn't make the finals losing 6-1. This left Alex  in the final to secure the win with 9-5 victory. The next event saw David Wales in a three-man round-robin event and in his first outing for the club did well eventhough he lost his two fights 4-1 and 6-1. The final event for Shuhari-Kai was another three-man round-robin event featuring JJ Burridge. JJ won his opening fight 9-4 and then followed up his 5 point winning margin with another 5 point winning margin taking the win and title with a 7-2 victory.

Richard Burridge would like to thank all the competitors for turning out to support your Borough, the coaches, judges and helpers for ensuring the events ran smoothly and finished on time. Full Havering results table to follow.
