EKGB Children's National Championships

Jodie performing NipaipoA small squad of three represented Shuhari-Kai at Ponds Forge in Sheffield on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th of September in the EKGB Children's National Championships. They came home with one gold between them and a lot of experience. All three were competing in individual events only as they didn't have the numbers to make up any teams. and all three performed well individually but were a little disappointed with the first days results. Sophie Roberts lost out in the first round 2 flags to 1 losing to the eventual winner Sophie Wise of EKK whose Bassai-Dai just pipped Sophie's Seienchin Kata. Sophie went into the repechage playoffs but lost out 2 flags to 1 once again as her Seipai was beaten. Jodie Miles made the second round in her Kata event after a 2 flags to win for her Bassai-Dai Kata but was unfortunate to loose the next round 2 flags to 1 as her Nipaipo Kata was narrowly beaten. Unfortunately, Jodie filed to make repechage for a chance at bronze. Alex Sell was another 2nd round casualty as his Bassai-Dai Kata was beaten 3 flags to 0 in the second round by the eventual event winner. It was looking good for Alex up to then as his opening round Kata, Seienchin, took all 3 flags. Alex went into repechage and took revenge over Curtis Chandler who had beaten him in an earlier competition with Alex taking all 3 flags this time for his Annan Kata. The next round saw Alex perform Nipaipo but was narrowly beaten 2 flags to 1 ending his medal hopes.

Sophie performing SeipaiAlex ChampionDay two saw the Kumite events get underway with Jodie Miles taking to the mat first electing to take part in the Girls 12-13 yrs U45Kg  event after weighing in at 40.1 Kg herself, eventhough the U40kg event only had three competitors. Great character from Jodie. Jodie fought a cagey opening round fight and it went to extra time with the score 0-0. Unfortunately for Jodie, she was beaten to the punch and had to bow out at this early stage but learnt from the experience. Sophie Roberts made a storming start to her Kumite event as she beat Roding's Haley Bremner 6-2 in her opening round. Her next round was rather more unfortunate she she was harshly penalised for contact and given a double warning. She started to pull back the scores but she was eventually disqualified for yet more disputable contact warning decisions. Alex Sell was the last to take to the mats and he didn't disappoint as he took the Gold in his Kumite event. After two opening round byes, Alex won his next bout 4-0 and went on to make the finals after securing a tight 1-0 victory in the closing seconds of his semi-final bout. The final saw the lead change hands with Alex opening the scoring and then losing the lead. But Alex stepped up a gear towards the end making sure he clinched the title with a 4-3 win over his opponent.

Congratulations to Alex Sell who wins his second successive EKGB National title and a big well done to Sophie and Jodie who put in some great performances but were unfortunate on the day. Congratulations also to Ryan Lambert from CKA, part of our Association, Shorai Karate Do International, who performed well in the Boys 12-13yrs over 50Kg event taking an excellent silver for his efforts. A special mention to Mat Tansley who captured Gold in his Kata event and went on to capture a silver in team Kata with his squad. Well done to all.
