Danson Open

What headline to use...? "Reason to Sell-ebrate as siblings do double", or maybe "Roberts is Danson Queen unbeaten in three", or there's "100% for Miles with 3 wins from 3 in 2004". You read, you pick.

A squad of 7 from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travelled to Bexleyheath on Sunday 15th February 2004 to compete in the Danson Open Junior Karate Championships. The Kata events were the first events contested and as per usual, the format remained the same with the top four from the initial points scoring round going through to the knockout stages.  Competing in his first Danson Open, Jordan Hodges was up first competing in the Under 10 yrs Novice to 5th Kyu category. Jordan scored 21.0 from the judges for his Kata which wasn't enough to carry him into the final four this time. Luke Bannister, another first timer to the Danson experience, performed Pinan Nidan Kata in the 10-15 yrs 6th to 4th Kyu event but like Jordan before him, Luke failed to secure enough points to take him into the last four.

Aimee SellNext saw 8yr old Aimee Sell competing in the Under 10 yrs 4th Kyu and above category. Aimee performed Seienchin Kata scoring 7.0, 7.1 & 7.2 from the three judges totalling 21.3. That score saw Aimee through to the knockout stages with the third highest score after all competitors had performed. In the semi-finals, Aimee performed Nipaipo Kata winning the decision 2 flags to 1. In the final, Aimee performed Seienchin Kata once again and like the round before, Aimee won the decision 2 flags to 1 to win her first ever open competition gold. The first of many for Aimee.

Jodie MilesThe last up for Shuhari-Kai was JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles, Alex Sell and Sophie Roberts all competing in the same event, the 10-15yrs 3-1st Kyu category. Jodie Miles was up first and set the pace scoring 7.2, 7.2 & 7.5 from the three judges totalling 21.9 for her Seienchin Kata which would put her into the last four. Sophie Roberts was up next and her performance of Seienchin Kata scored 6.9, 6.9 & 7.0 totalling 20.8 which would leave her just outside the final four knockout stages. Alex Sell then obtained the top mark for his performance of Chatanyara Kushanku scoring 7.2, 7.3 & 7.5 from the judges totalling 22.0. JJ Burridge was the last of the quartet up but his Bassai-Dai Kata's score was 7.1, 6.7 & 7.2 totalling 21.0 leaving him outside of the final four placings. The semi-finals saw team mates Jodie and Alex drawn together and it was Jodie that went through after her Nipaipo Kata beat Alex's Seienchin Kata 2 flags to 1. The final saw Jodie perform Seipai Kata impressing the judges enough award her first place with a 3 flags to 0 victory securing Shuhari-Kai's second gold of the day and their third medal with Alex's bronze.

Jordan HodgesAfter the drama of the Kata, the Kumite fighting events got under way with Jordan Hodges kicking things off once again for the squad. Jordan, competing in the mixed Under 30kg event was an early casualty losing in the first round 5 points to 2. Jodie Miles was next to take to the mats in the Girls Under 40kg event. Like Jordan, Jodie failed to progress to the next round losing her opening round fight 4 points to 2.

Luke BannisterAlex Sell made no such mistakes in the Boys Under 40kg event, as he won his opening round fight 4-2 to make it into the semi-finals. Team mate Luke Bannister, competing in the same event received a bye propelling him straight into the semi-finals. Alex made heavy work of his next fight winning 3 points to 2. Even though he was all over his opponent, Alex didn't take full advantage in the scoring stakes leading to a nervy finish. An all Shuhari-Kai final was failed to materialise when Luke bailed out in his semi-final bout losing 2 points to 0. This left Alex able to avenge his team mates defeat by taking the gold with a 5 points to 1 victory and maintain his Danson Open unbeaten run intact.

Sophie Roberts was up next competing in the Girls Under 45kg event. Sophie won her opening match with a resounding 8 points to 4 victory. Sophie then cruised the semi-finals with a 4-2 win and secured Shuhari-Kai's fourth Gold of the day with another stunning victory winning 5-3 in the final. Sophie maintained her unbeaten Danson Open record with this, her third Danson title in succession.

JJ BurrdigeNot so much luck for JJ Burridge who, after a dramatic and spectacular contest, bowed out in the first round losing 6-4 in an entertaining match.

So a good day for Shuhari-Kai with four golds and two bronzes. Aimee won her first ever open competition gold and made it a Sell family double with her brother Alex maintaining his Danson unbeaten record for fighting with another gold. Alex was the only double medallist bringing home a bronze too. Sophie Roberts matched Alex's record by maintaining her unbeaten fighting record as well, securing her third Danson gold in succession. Jodie Miles has stormed into the new year winning her third successive Kata gold in as many competitions to maintain a 100% record so far this year. Well done also to JJ Burridge, Jordan Hodges and Luke Bannister who brought home Shuhari-Kai's other bronze medal.
