AKA Eastern Area Open Championships    Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell took part in the AKA Eastern Area Open Championships on Sunday 22nd August 2004. The long trip to Nottingham gave them both valuable experience and a trophy for silver for Alex gained in the Boys 10-15yrs Kata event.      Alex didn't drop one flag on his way to the Kata final proving his Seienchin, Bassai-Dai, Nipaipo and Annan Kata's were unstoppable. In the final though, Alex came up against a very good opponent who's age and experience proved too much for Alex as his Chatanyara Kushanku Kata lost out 3-0. Meanwhile, Sophie made the second round in the girls Kata event after winning all three flags for her Seienchin Kata in the first round. The second round saw Sophie narrowly loose out as her Bassai-Dai Kata lost out 2 flags to 1 but it could of gone any way. Better luck next time Bandit.    The Kumite event for Sophie also saw her bow out in the second round. After winning her first round match 4-1, she came back from 7-2 down to draw level in her next match before just losing out at the end 9-7. A good display from Sophie giving her the chance to shake off those holiday cobwebs. Alex also bowed out in the second round after an 8-4 victory in his first round match. The second round match saw Alex lose 2-1 as his techniques were not being scored by the referee. His Gyakuzuki just before the bell went also wasn't given eventhough it was clearly inside the time. Never mind, you can't win them all and there's no point moaning, I'm sure Alex will go all out at his next comp to prove his point.   Well done to the small squad, eventhough they only came home with one trophy they enjoyed the day.
