British Future Champions

The 2nd British Future Champions tournament for 2004 was held at on Sunday 12th September at the New Generation Sports Centre, in Dudley, West Midlands. A squad of five from Shuhari-Kai made the long trip to Dudley and were a little disappointed, not with their individual performances, but with the perceived results.

Up first to compete was Aimee Sell in the 9yrs and under Kata event. Aimee performed Nipaipo in her first round taking all three judges flags. Round two saw Aimee perform Seienchin Kata once again taking all three flags. The semi-finals saw Aimee against Jack Hayter and her Seienchin Kata gave her the decision two flags to one. The finals saw Aimee perform Nipaipo Kata but she lost the decision on this occasion two flags to one taking the Silver as consolation.

Alex Sell and Jodie Miles were next up, both competing in the 10-12yrs 5th Kyu and over Kata event. Jodie stormed into the second round after a convincing 3-0 for her Seienchin Kata in the opening round. Jodie once again took all the flags in the next round following her display of Seipai Kata. The third round (quarter-finals) saw Jodie perform Nipaipo but unfortunately lost the decision two flags to one just missing out on a medal chance. Alex, meanwhile, made the second round following his 2-1 victory in the opening round following his display of Chatanyara Kushanku Kata. The second round saw Alex perform Nipaipo Kata to good effect taking all three judges flags. The third round had Alex performing Chatanyara Kushanku once again and he took the victory 2-1 again. The semi-final gave Alex the chance to perform Annan Kata which he did well enough to secure a 2-1 win to take him into the finals. The final saw Alex's winning streak come to an end as his Nipaipo Kata was beaten two flags to one leaving Alex with a credible Silver medal.

Sophie Roberts, along with Matt Tansley were competing in the 13-15yrs Kata event and both made it into round two before losing the decisions. Sophie had performed Seienchin Kata in round one and progressed into the second with a 1-2 victory. In the second round her Seipai Kata just lost out two flags to one. Matt performed Seipai for his opening Kata and took a 3-0 victory into round two. The second round saw Matt bow out as his Seienchin Kata lost the decision two flags to one.

The girls, Aimee, Jodie and Sophie joined forces for the team Kata event. After a first round bye, the stormed into the finals with a convincing 3-0 win after performing Seienchin. In the final, the girls performed Seienchin once again and looked odds-on favourites to get the decision but strangely lost out two flags to one. One of the strangest decisions I've ever seen. But then there was the Kumite to come...

JJ Burridge, after waiting hours for some action, was an early casualty after losing in the opening round of the Cadet's event. JJ lost 8-1 where nearly all attempts for him to score were missed by the ref. Never mind, Alex Sell would make up for the disappointment. At least that was the plan. Alex lost his opening round fight after some indecisive judgment calls from the ref. Alex then went into the bronze medal play-off and was finally disqualified after leading his opponent 12-3. Any attempt to score by Alex was being adjudged to be excessively hard just because his opponent would cry when Alex went near him. Not dubious, more scandalous. Jodie Miles had a tough time too as her opening opponent stood a good two feet higher than her. Jodie put up a good show and had the scores tied at 3-3 at the end. In extra time, her opponent beat her to the punch to take this tight contest. Sophie Roberts made up for some of the disappointment felt during the Kumite events as she entered the girls 13-15 years event. Sophie convincingly won her opening fight 7-0 and stormed through her next round with a 14-4 win. How she was allowed to go as high as 14 points we're not sure (the ref wasn't sure either). The semi-final saw Sophie finally succumb to a very good opponent who beat her 7-3. Sophie then had to battle for the bronze medal and she took no prisoners as she beat her opponent 6-2 to take the solitary bronze medal.

SQUAD: JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell and special guest Matt Tansley.
