London Youth Games Finals

On Sunday 13th July 2003, Crystal Palace hosted the London Youth Games Karate Finals. The finals consisted of four competitors in each category with each competitor competing in a round-robin contest. The Kata events were first, followed by the Kumite events.

Havering's only female Kata representative was Sam Clark who beat all three of her competitors to take Havering's first Gold for the girls. Sam went on to complete a golden double by winning her Kumite event too, winning all three fights. That, unfortunately, was Havering's last gold of the day. The rest of the girls squad did fantastically well by taking Silver medals in the remainder of the Kumite categories.  Jodie Miles won her first two fights but lost her final fight to Redbridge. Jodie did well in her first games and aims to go for the double next year. Sophie Roberts also did well in her first games. After losing her first fight, Sophie shook off her disappointment to win her next two fights to take second spot. Sophie's definitely a contender for top honours next year. Lauren McCarthy and Leigh Reed both secured two victories from three fights to take silver medals and round off an impressive display from the girls squad who finished in second position overall, just behind the Radbridge Girls team.

Competing in the Kata event for the boys was Dan Clark. Dan won one from three Katas and gained third spot providing the boys team with its first Bronze medal of the day. Next up was Alex Sell in the Kumite event. Alex, like Sophie, lost his first fight but bounced back admirably winning his next two fights providing the boys team with the first Silver medal of the day.  Alex was followed by James Hartwell  and Mitchell Kiel who both competed for Havering in the same Kumite event. Both fighters secured one win apiece each winning a bronze medal for the team. The last two competitors for Havering were Chris Pugh and Chris Walling. Both competitors came through tough rounds to win two out of three fights and secure a pair of silver medals for Havering but it wasn't enough to propel the boys squad into third position and they had to settle for fourth spot on the day. Boys team winners were Redbridge. The Havering squad would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Redbridge on their victories in both the boys and girls events.

Overall, Havering secured 2 Golds, 7 Silvers and 3 Bronzes. Well done to both the boys and girls teams who pulled together well and if there was a trophy for support, Havering would have walked it! Here's to next year!

Havering squad: Sam Clark, Leigh Reed, Lauren McCarthy, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Sammy Burridge, Claire Page, Dan Clark, James Hartwell, Mitchell Kiel, Chris Pugh, Alex Sell, Chris Walling, JJ Burridge, Robert Clark, Mathew Johnson.
