Shuhari-Kai Xmas Competition

Daren grabs Alex's leg againFred West and Luke BannisterThe final competition of the year, the Shuhari-Kai Christmas Fun Competition (the emphasis being on fun), was held on 21st December 2003 at Harold Wood Dojo. This provided a chance for the students to unwind after what has been a long year for the club. I thought I'd seen it all but then I learnt a thing or two and what a laugh! The traditional Kumite competition rules still applied - if you think you're hard enough, step up a category. This saw some interesting and amusing contests, big Fred West taking on Luke Bannister and Alex Sell going head-to-head with Daren Basset. It was like watching an episode of the Simpsons - Alex kicks, Daren grabs his leg and takes him down and scores, Alex says "Dohhh", Alex kicks again, Daren grabs his leg and takes him down and scores, Alex says "Dohhh", and so on. Well done to everyone who participated and congratulations to everyone who picked up a medal, especially England representative Big 'G' Lawrence Grosvenor who took the Gold medal in the adults Kumite event beating JJ Burridge in the final.

The Webmaster against Alex GrovesKata Killers - Aimee Sell v Abigail GeeBut if the Kumite was fun, the Kata was hilarious. With the most bazaar handicap system ever employed. Two competitors against eachother at the same time whilst wearing a covered face head guard rendering any sight impossible. Not content to let the competitors complete their Katas whilst blind, each competitor was strapped up with weights on each arm and on only one leg (for balance purposes obviously). Having attempted a couple of Katas myself, I can honestly say that not only does the disorientation throw you, but also the single leg weight really knocks your balance. Very amusing to watch, even funnier to try it yourself. Well done Sensei Richard Burridge for thinking up with this one. Once again, well done to everyone who participated in the Kata Handicaps and congratulations to al the medal winners - you deserved it.
