No Sheepish Performance in Wales

Jodie in Kata finalA small squad of four from Havering based Shuhari-Kai Karate Club, ventured into Wales for the Welsh Open Karate Tournament. The tournament was held on Saturday 15th November 2003 at the Welsh Institute of Sport in Cardiff, around the grounds of the impressive Cardiff Castle. The squad was rewarded with one Welsh Champion and another Welsh Finalist in a Shuhari-Kai one-two.

Sophie Roberts competed in the 12-15 yrs Kata event against 22 other competitors and received all three judges’ flags for her performance of Seienchin Kata in the first Round. In round two, Sophie was knocked out as her Kushanku Kata failed to score any flags from the judges.

Alex in Kata finalMeanwhile, Jodie Miles, Alex Sell and sister Aimee Sell were competing in the Under 12 yrs Kata event against a massive 52 other competitors. The first round saw all three club mates performed Seienchin Kata and received all three judges flags to proceed into the next round. Alex performed Nipaipo Kata in round two and received all judges flags once more. Aimee performed Pinan Yodan but failed to secure any of the judges flags bowing out at that stage. Jodie, however, progressed into the next round scoring all three flags for her performance of Bassai-Dai Kata. Into round three and Alex performed Bassai-Dai this time being awarded all three flags as did Jodie for her performance of Seipai Kata. Round four saw Alex perform Chatanyara Kushanku to take the win two flags to one whilst Jodie secured her place in the semi-finals scoring all three flags for her Seienchin Kata. Into the semi-finals and Alex performing Seienchin Kata secured all three judges flags for his performance of Seienchin Kata whilst Jodie won through with two flags to one for her rendition of Bassai-Dai. This left club mates Alex and Jodie in the finals. Drawn first, Alex performed Chatanyara Kushanku, which was followed by Jodie performing Seipai Kata. Jodie won the decision two flags to one to capture the Welsh Open Kata title. This was a brave performance from Alex who had been suffering from flu but still competed.

Aimee scoring a Jodan MawashigeriOnto the Kumite sparring categories and Aimee Sell was up first. Another large category consisting of 32 for the Mixed Under 10 yrs event, 8 year old Aimee got off to a flying start winning her first round bout 3-0 after a lovely Jodan Mawashigeri. In round two, Aimee got better winning 4-0 this time. In the third round Aimee secured her place in the quarter finals after her convincing 5-0 victory but her luck ran out as her quarter final match saw her lose 1-3 as her opponent scored a kick against her in the dying seconds. Her victorious opponent went on the win the event. Unfortunately for Aimee, after battling all boys in her event, she came away empty handed.

Sophie in her Kumite boutSophie Roberts was up next competing in the Female 12-15 yrs Under 5’6’’ category with 25 competitors ion her event. 12 year old Sophie was up against it from the start being the youngest in this category. After battling her way to a draw in the first round, it went down to sudden death. Unlucky Sophie was judged to have scored second and had to bow out of the competition at that early stage.

Finally, Alex Sell and Jodie Miles were competing in the same Mixed 10-11 yrs Kumite sparring event. This was another large category with 56 competitors vying for the title. The first round saw both Alex and Jodie receive a bye into round two. Alex was up first in the second round and won through to round three winning 3-1. Jodie narrowly progressed into third round after her 1-0 victory. The third round saw Alex take the victory 3-2 and Jodie also progress with her 5-3 victory. The quarter-finals saw Jodie bow out after losing her bout 2-9 but Alex cruised to victory winning 9-0. At that stage, Alex decided to pull put of the competition just before the medal rounds as he now felt the terrible effects of his flu kick in whilst seemingly on course to secure gold. A brave decision but health is more important than medals at this stage.

So an unfortunate end to the foray into Wales after such a good start. The categories were extremely large and each one of the four club mates did well and supported each other throughout the day. A brave effort from Aimee and Sophie who came away better for their experiences, a title for Jodie and a silver and flu for Alex saw us pack up for the long drive home.
