TKA International Open Championships

Goresbrook Leisure Centre was the host for the TKA International Open Championships held on the 16th November 2003. As ever, first events of the day were the Kata events and as previous TKA Kata events, the Katas were judges on a points system. Up first for the Shuhari-Kai squad was Samuel Gee and Luke Bannister in the 15yrs & Under 6th-4th Kyu. Samuel performed Pinan Sandan Kata scoring 6.2, 6.3 & 6.9 whilst Luke, also performing Pinan Sandan scored 6.3, 6.5 & 7.0. Both scores were unfortunately out of the medal positions on this occasion in this large category containing 35 competitors.

Another large category was the Junior Kata 15yrs & Under 3rd-1st Kyu Kata with 37 competitors contesting for top honour. First up was Jodie Miles who scored 7.4, 7.3 & 7.2 totalling 21.9 for her performance of Seienchin Kata. Next up performing Bassai-Dai was JJ Burridge. JJ scored 7.2, 7.2 & 7.1 from the three judges totalling 21.5. Up next was 8yr old Aimee Sell who performed Seienchin Kata. She scored 7.2, 7.2 & 7.2 totalling 21.6. Last up from the squad in this category was Sophie Roberts who scored 7.1, 7.3 & 7.1 from the judges totalling 21.5. Once all the katas had been performed and scored, Jodie was left in joint third place with two other competitors who each had to perform an additional kata. Jodie performed Seipai Kata and scored 7.5, 7.3 & 7.3 from the judges totalling 22.1 beating her two other rivals scores of 21.7 and 21.8. This gave Jodie third place overall and a Bronze medal.

In the Senior 16yrs and Over Dan Grades Kata event, Alex Groves failed to make the medal positions as too did Ed Vinas who scored 21.5 and was only 0.1 points outside of the medal positions. 4th out of 15 competitors was a good result from our international Lithuanian Champion.  Finally our Kata team of Jodie, JJ and Sophie came 5th overall out of 11 teams, scoring 7.1, 7.1 & 7.2  for their performance of Seienchin Kata.

Onto the Kumite events and first up was Jordan Hodges in the 8-9yrs Novice to 6th Kyu. Jordan narrowly won his opening round bout going through with 5 point to 4. In his second round bout, Jordan cruised through with a 9-2 victory to secure a bronze medal. The semi-final round saw Jordan narrowly lose out 3-4 for a chance to go for gold, but Jordan was pleased to come away with a medal after falling just short in his previous competitions.  Next up was Vishaal Dovedi competing in the Boys 8-9yrs 5th Kyu & Above Kumite. After receiving a bye in the first round, Vishaal went out in the next round narrowly losing 2-3 just short of the medal rounds.

In the Boys 10-11yrs 5th Kyu & above Kumite, Samuel Gee, Luke Bannister and Luke Mount were all competing together. Sam was up first and received a bye to the second round. Next up was Luke Bannister who won through 3-0 after his opponent pulled out through injury mid-bout. Luke Mount also made it to round two winning 3-0. In round two, Sam up first again lost 0-8 and bowed out of the competition. Next saw an unlucky draw as both Luke's were drawn against each other. After some nail-biting tension, Luke Mount won through 4-0. In round three, Luke continued his winning streak narrowly making the semi-final round 2-1. In the semi-final, Luke's luck ran out as he lost out 2-3 but not before securing a bronze medal his efforts on the day. Well done Luke.

In the 14-15 yrs 5th Kyu & above, James Mount missed his fight as he was in the toilet when his name was called! Meanwhile, JJ Burridge, who didn't go to the toilet, went out in the first round narrowly losing 2-3. Next up was Aimee Sell competing in the Girls 8-9yrs 5th Kyu & above category. Aimee received a bye in her first round and lost out 1-4 in her next round. But due to the number of competitors in this category, she had already secured a bronze medal position.

In the Girls 10-11yrs 5th Kyu & above category, Jodie Miles stormed through her first round bout winning 6-1. In round two, Jodie eased to an 8-5 victory to make the semi-final round. The semi-final saw Jodie win through 4-2 to make the final at least securing silver. But silver wasn't an option as she held her nerve to take the victory and gold 2-0.

The Girls 12-13 yrs 5th Kyu & above category saw Amy Mount and Sophie Roberts competing against 30 other competitors in this large event. Amy mount was first up and unfortunately went out in the first round losing 3-4. Sophie made no such mistake as she won her first round match 5-2. In the second round, Sophie had a harder time but managed to take the narrow victory 6-5. A slightly better margin of 7-5 in her third round fight saw her into the semi-finals. Unfortunately, she lost the semi-final 3-5 but secured a well deserved bronze medal for her efforts.

Alex Groves made a brief appearance in the Mens 16-18yrs Kumite losing 0-8 in the first round. Putting up a tougher display was Ed Vinas in the Mens 19yrs+ 3rd Kyu & above Kumite. Ed put up a good show showing lots of aggression but narrowly bowed out losing 1-2.

The final event of the day was the Mixed Team Kumite - 1 under 4'5'', 1 under 5'0'' & 1 over 5'0''. Aimee, Jodie and Sophie made up our team. Eventhough they were all girls, they put up a tremendous display of spirit and determination against their male opponents. Aimee up first won her first fight 5-0 to give the team a great start. Jodie followed but narrowly lost out to her opponent. Last up was Sophie who managed to secure a battling draw and secure the overall team victory on points scored. In the second round, Aimee narrowly lost out in the dying seconds as she gave away points to a Jodan Mawashigeri. Next up for the team was Jodie who needed to win to give the team a chance, and she didn't disappoint as she secured victory. Last up was Sophie. After receiving a bloody nose in the fist round, Sophie was keen to avoid excessive contact, but her wish was short lived as she received another couple of blows to the face. She made a spirited come-back but failed to overturn the points deficit. the team finally finished 5th out of 11.

Altogether the squad of 13 came away with 1 Gold and 5 Bronzes. A great team spirit from the squad, lots of support and lots of encouragement resulting in some welcoming medals. Definitely more of the same please!

Squad: Luke Bannister, JJ. Burridge, Vishaal Dovedi, Samuel Gee, Alex Groves, Jordan Hodges, Jodie Miles, Amy Mount, James Mount, Luke Mount, Aimee Sell, Sophie Roberts and Ed Vinas.
