Seishan Open Championships

No medals at the Seishan Open Championships on Sunday 10th August 2003 but plenty of good performances. On the hottest day in England's history, the temperatures were a few degrees higher inside the Grundy Leisure Centre as the competition warmed up. A small squad of just four, from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club, attended the event in the knowledge that the categories were well stacked against them but still chose to compete for the experience, and plenty of experience was gained. Aimee Sell and Sophie Roberts both took the opportunity to perform Seienchin Kata for the first time in competition. Aimee was up against the eventual bronze medallist in the first round and eventhough she performed her Kata well, she was eliminated. Sophie, on the other hand, took the judges flags for her Kata and proceeded into the next round. Unfortunately for Sophie, she failed to progress any further in the Kata event. Both competitors can now build on their experiences gained here. Alex Sell made the most progress in the Kata event eventually finishing fourth. As there was no joint third place, Alex had a one-on-one for third place but lost out to an older and stronger competitor. Alex can take heart from the fact that the event was 15 yrs and under and 11 year old Alex has plenty of time to keep making progress. Following the individual Kata events, the team Kata event was entered by Sophie, Aimee and Alex. Never having competed together in a team Kata event before, they performed their chosen Kata well, but only 2 weeks training proved their downfall as they were beaten in the first round by an  experienced black belt team.

In the Kumite events, young Jordan Hodges and Aimee Sell were in the same category - 8yrs and under. 7th Kyu Jordan is just beginning to experience the thrill of competition and judging by his performance, it will not be too long before every body is chasing his titles. On this day though, Jordan went out in the first round 3-2 after putting in a spirited performance only just losing out. Aimee Sell progressed into the second round after an initial 4-0 victory in her first bout. It was 3-3 in her second round bout and extra time was called after the draw. Unfortunately, her competitor scored a Gyakuzuki against her to go through. Sophie Roberts was another first round casualty but not for want of trying. Like Aimee, her bout went to extra time at 3-3, and like Aimee, her competitor scored a Gyakuzuki against her to go through too. Alex Sell was up next and went out in the second round after his 3-2 first round victory. Alex showed good techniques in this bout, sweeping and gyaking like a true professional. However, the next round proved a little scrappy as Alex gave away 3 penalty points for various infringements and lost the encounter 3-1. Once again, Alex was up against older and heavier competitors but showed true spirit and determination in his efforts.

Well done to the the four who attended this event, I'm sure all of them have gained some valuable experience from this competition that will help them in the future: Jordan Hodges, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
