Double Gold at Malta International Open Championships

Shuhari Kai representative, Alex Sell made the trip to Malta to compete in the 1st Malta International Open Championships held at Msida, Malta on 20th July 2003. Representatives from a number of countries including Germany, Italy, Sweden, braved the 103+ degree heat to participate in the first open championships to be held on the Maltese Islands.

The first event of the championships for Alex was the Juniors 5th Kyus and above (11 yrs and below) Kata. This event consisted of three rounds - two compulsory (Shitei) WKF Katas and one optional (Tokui) Kata. Alex performed Seienchin in the first round followed by Bassai Dai in round two. In the final round, due to a mix up between a Maltese and an Italian competitor, Alex had to perform Bassai Dai once more instead of his chosen Tokui Kata. This setback made no difference to the outcome as Alex won the event scoring all three flags in each round.

After the remainder of the Kata events and the weapons Kata events, the Kumite commenced. Alex was competing in the Boys 10/11 yrs Kumite and won his first bout convincingly. At 6-0 to Alex, he took a blow to his 'whistle' from a low kick but decided to carry on. Alex produced a couple of Gyakuzuki's in quick succession to complete a 8-0 victory. In his next round fight, Alex once again got his Gyakuzuki's working well producing yet another 8-0 victory. In the Final, Alex had a tougher fight. Failing to land all of his Gyak's, Alex resorted to his trusted Mawashigeri's. After receiving a contact warning for Jodan Mawashigeri, Alex scored a Chudan Mawashigeri to go 2-0. Alex then dropped his first point of the tournament letting the score go to 2-1. Alex then switched back to Gyak's and picked up another point. Alex than went into defensive mode and saw out the rest of the round win the bout 3-1 and take his second Gold of the championships. Alex’s only worry now was how to get his two massive trophies home on the plane!

The Malta Championships were a great success and the Maltese students and competitors must be congratulated on their behaviour and friendliness throughout the championships and training seminars with a special thanks to Chris Galea for organising the tournament. Another big thank you to Joe Anderson who, although with the Toyakwai Association, helped coach Alex when fighting on the mat. Nice to see barriers broken down when National pride is at stake! Well done too to the Toyawai students who also came away with trophies, more experience and fond memories of Malta.
