Interview with a Black Belt

At the recent Shuhari-Kai Summer camp at Mablethorpe, Alex Groves became Shuhari-Kai's newest Black Belt after taking and passing his 1st Dan grading. The Shuhari-Kai web team took the opportunity to interview him about his achievement.

New Black Belt Alex Groves with Sensei Richard Burridge and Steve Edwards.

Web: How long have you been doing Karate?
Alex: I have been doing karate for about 10 or 11 years.

Web: How old are you now?
Alex: I am 16, 17 end of this year.

Web: Why did you start?
Alex: I started because its a good way to keep fit and a nice place to meet people who have the same interests as I do, to do karate.

Web: What does it feel like to become a black belt?
Alex: It feels like I have achieved something very big, but I still have a lot to learn from now.

Web: How did you train for the grading?
Alex: I trained for the grading with a lot of work and effort, going to karate as often as I could, and with the help of sensei Richard, Steve, and Ron.

Web: Did you have to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically?
Alex: Yes, you have to believe you can do it, but not be overconfident.

Web: How long was the grading and what was involved?
Alex: I think the grading was about 2 hours long. I started off with my basic techniques, which were things like kicks and punches, like doing line work in a lesson except I was being marked. Then I had to do 4 katas, which were Jion, Chinto, Pinan Godan, and Kushanku. I then done all my pair techniques with JJ Burridge, 1-4 head blocks, 1-6 kick blocks, 1-8 Oyo Kumite, 1-6 Khion Waza. I then sat my theory paper, then 50 v sits, press ups, sit ups, and squat thrusts in that order. I then had to fight, 1 on 1, 2 on 1, then 3 on 1.

Web: What's been your greatest achievement to date?
Alex: My greatest achievement to date was getting my black belt.

Web: Ambitions?
Alex: To help the people who are going for they're black belt next year to get ready for it.

Web: How do you think the club's developing?
Alex: I feel the club is developing very nicely, all of the students have a very positive attitude and are willing to help each other, the club is a great success.

Web: What changes would you make (if any)?
Alex: I wouldn't make any changes to the club, its fine the way it is.
