3rd South England Grand Prix – Round 2 Alex Sell was once again the only representative from Shuhari-Kai to attend the next round of the South England Grand Prix held on 14th September 2003. Alex travelled to Loughton in Essex to continue to compete for the Elite award for the overall champion. Having secured a gold for Kata and a bronze in Kumite in the last round, Alex was eager to continue his good progress.     Alex made a good start by taking Bronze in the 10-13 Brown Belts Kata. He performed Seienchin in round one, Bassai-Dai in round two and Chatanyara Kushanku in the third round taking all flags in each round. In round four, Alex decided to perform Kanku-Dai but lost the decision 2 flags to 1. After that set-back, Alex then went through the reportage rounds to secure third place.      Following the Kata events, Alex then competed in the Under 40KG Kumite event. Alex won his first three bouts convincingly but came up against a tough opponent in the final. In an even match it was 4-4 coming into the final few seconds. Just before the buzzer sounded, Alex struck with a Gyakuzuki just before being swept to the floor and hit in the face after his head bashed the floor. After receiving medical attention ensuring he was OK to continue, and the judges indicated their decisions... Alex had been adjudged to have scored first and thereby gave him a 5-4 victory and the Gold medal position. Alex had strangely secured another Gold and Bronze finish but in the other order this time. With one more round to go, let’s hope the 'Psycho' takes double gold and walks away with the coveted Elite Champion Grand Prix title.     Click HERE for Round 1 report.
