Shuhari Shines at Danson Open

A small squad of five attended the Danson Open in Bexleyheath on Sunday 29th June 2003, and between them they came away with 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze trophy.

Alex & Jodie - Gold & SilverAimee Sell, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell all competed in the same Kata event whilst Vishaal Dovedi competed in a separate category. Vishaal failed to progress to the last four along with Aimee and Sophie, but Jodie and Alex both secured high enough points to compete in the knockout stages. Thankfully, Jodie and Alex were not drawn together which meant they could both progress to the final if they won, and of course they did! In a close final, Alex came out the victor picking up Gold with Jodie taking the Silver home.

In the Kumite rounds, Aimee fought her best fight so far and was unlucky to get knocked out but not before she had secured Bronze in the event. Up at 4-2 at one stage, she eventually lost out to the eventual winner losing 5-6. Next up was Jodie but she failed to make it into the medals this time. With the scores at 1-1 Jodie's opponent scored a Jodan Mawashigeri against her and although Jodie brought the score back to 4-2 she couldn't pull back the remaining points. Sophie came through a bruising encounter to take Shuhari-Kai's second Gold of the day making up for missing out on a Kata placing. Sophie was knocked in the face, knocked in the stomach, had the medics called to her numerous times and came through a nail-biting extra time fight to become the Danson U40kg Girls Champion. Alex also came through a nail-biting extra time fight in his final fight of the day to win Shuhari-Kai's third Gold. With the scores at 4-4, Alex landed a thumping Mawashigeri on his opponents back to gain 2 points and win the bout and the boys U40kg title. Last up for Shuhari-Kai was Vishaal. Vishaal was fighting in the U50kg and in an epic David versus Goliath battle, little Vishaal couldn't emulate David's feat of defeating Goliath. But all credit to Vishaal who kept attacking and taking the fight to his opponent, but he was out pointed in the end.

To summarise, a great team performance from Shuhari-Kai, who, at their first ever Danson Open experience, came away feeling unlucky not to have won more! What a credit to their coach!

Squad: Vishaal Dovedi, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell, Alex Sell.
