BIKO British Open Championships – Dream Team strike Gold.

Another early Sunday morning start saw the Shuhari-Kai squad turn out for the BIKO British Open Championships on 14th September 2003 at the Grundy Leisure Centre in Cheshunt. The championships turned out to be a larger event than expected with between 30-50 competitors for each of the children’s individual events making the categories very tough indeed.

First event of the day was the Team Kata. The event was judged upon one round of Kata on a scoring system. The highest score wins. The Shuhari-Kai Kata team of JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts performed their chosen Kata, Seienchin, which was scored 6.9, 6.9, & 7.4 totalling 21.2. Their score secured a Silver medal and was only 0.1 short of the Gold position. Well done to the team and what a great start to the day. The individual Kata events were next with Vishaal Dovedi and Aimeé Sell in the 9 Yrs and below category. The event consisted of one round of scored Katas with the top eight going through to a final scoring round. Vishaal performed Pinan Yodan Kata and scoring 6.8, 6.8 & 6.9 totalling 20.5 which unfortunately wasn’t quite good enough to take him into the final round. Aimeé Sell on the other hand, performing Seienchin, gained a score of 6.9 7.0 7.0 totalling 20.9 which secured her a place in the final eight. In the finals, Aimeé performed Pinan Yodan Kata scoring 6.9 6.9 6.9 totalling 20.7 which put her in fifth place overall. A great effort from Aimeé and just short of the medals, well done.

Abigail and Sam Gee were both in the 10-15 yrs 4th Kyu and below Kata category. Abigail, performing Pinan Shodan, scored 6.6, 6.7 & 6.5 whilst Sam scored 6.6, 6.6 & 6.9 for his display of Pinan Nidan Kata. Both fell short of the qualifying mark for the final eight. In the 10-15 yrs 3rd kyu and above Kata, JJ Burridge, Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts were all in action along with another 45 competitors. First up was Jodie, who performed Seienchin Kata scoring 7.1, 7.1 & 6.9 totalling 21.1. Soon JJ took the stage for his display of Bassai-Dai. JJ was scored 6.8, 7.0 & 7.0 by the three judges totalling 20.8. Last up was Sophie who was scored 6.8, 6.8 & 7.0 for her performance of Seienchin Kata. Unfortunately for the three, neither made it into the final round with Jodie just missing out by one place. They all finished in the top half of the group which was a great achievement in itself considering there were many older children and Dan grades competing in this category.

On to the Kumite events with Aimeé up first in the Under 9 yrs below 4’ 2’’ category. Aimeé went out in the first round losing 8-2 after receiving a couple of blows to the head but come back to snatch some points. She fought well and is consistently scoring points now which should help her progress into winning more matches. Abigail, Jodie and Sophie were up next in the Girls 10-12 yrs category. Abigail went out guns blazing but failed to land any points as she bowed out losing 4-0. Sophie also failed to progress into the next round after losing in extra time after a 4-4 draw. Unlucky Sophie conceded a chudan Mawashigeri shortly into extra time to the eventual event winner. Jodie made the most progress in this event and just missed out on a medal finishing 5th overall. Jodie got a bye in the first round and won her second bout 6-2 after some impressive jodan kicks. Her third round bout saw her mixing it up again eventually winning 7-3. Jodie finally succumb in her forth round bout losing 4-5. Jodie had maintained the lead throughout the match but conceded a Gyakuzuki punch in the dying seconds to bow out penultimate medal rounds. Perhaps the fire drill coupled with the fire brigade attendance just before her next fight interrupted her concentration!

Vishaal, competing in the 9 yrs and under 4’2" and over category was another first round casualty. Vishaal lost 8-0 but would of won on aggression alone as he kept pushing forward. Unfortunately for Vishaal, he lost to the eventual event winner who was extremely fast and elusive. Sam won his first round bout in the boys 10-12 yrs below 5 Ft category. Sam landed a timely Mawashigeri before conceding a late Gyakuzuki, but Sam held on till the end. In the following round, Sam failed to progress as he lost 8-0. JJ was competing in the land of the giants as he was dwarfed in the Boys 13-15 yrs category but brilliantly managed to secure 5th position. After a first round bye, JJ won the next round 5-3 but bowed out in the next round after losing 4-1. Even so, this was a good result for him.

The girls Kumite team came through two rounds of competition to take the Gold in 10-12 yrs girls team event. In their first round, Abigail won the first bout 5-3 giving Shuhari-Kai the upper hand. Jodie, however, couldn’t quite finish off the match and narrowly lost her bout 6-5. This left the pressure on anchor girl Sophie to secure the victory. Making up for her early disappointment in the individual event, Sophie took no prisoners winning her bout 6-1 and the match for the team. In the final round they kept the same running order as in their first match with Abigail on the mat first. Abigail couldn’t quite repeat her previous round’s performance and narrowly lost the bout 5-3. Next up was Jodie to keep the team in the contest. Having lost her previous bout, she made no mistakes this time securing an impressive 10-3 win. Once again it was left to anchor girl Sophie to complete the victory. She showed great determination to once again win her bout taking the match at 6-3 and by doing secured the Shuhari-Kai’s girls team Gold.
