Training Session / Course with Ticky Donovan O.B.E. 8th Dan - 20th July 2008

Wadokai England have organised a special Kumite training course with Ticky Donovan O.B.E. 8th Dan.  This course will be 'open to all' EKF Members.  It will also be open to Karateka of any age and grade and Wadokai coaches, Winston and Stennett will be on hand to assist the younger students or those of a lower grade.

The venue is booked from 11:00am - 3:00pm  

The price for this course will be £15:00 for Juniors and £20:00 for Seniors (16+)  

The training session will begin promptly at 11:45 and run for one and a half hours, a half hour break and then resume for another hour.  The session will be held as one group.  The doors will be open from 11:00 for registration and for the students to warm up ready for a prompt 11:45 start.

Ishinryu Summer Open Championships - 11 May 2008

Congratulations to double gold medallist Alex Sell and silver medallist Aimee Sell who competed at the Ishinryu Summer Open Championships on Sunday 11th May 2008. Alex collected gold in the Male 16-17yrs Kata and followed this up with another gold in the Male 16-17yrs Kumite. 12 year old Aimee lost out to Ishinryu's Emma Lucraft in the Girls U16yrs Kata to claim a silver. Well done to both.


SENI08 Karate Classic Championships - 27 April 2008

A small squad of five from Havering’s Shuhari-Kai Karate Club, competed in the Karate Classic Tournament being held as part of the SENI08 Martial Arts exhibition in London’s Excel Centre. The tournament took place on Sunday 27th April 2008 commencing at around 10:00am with the Kata events.

Aimee Sell competed in the Mixed Kata (Patterned Forms), U16yrs, Black-Belt category. This was an extremely tough category featuring a host of current English National Champions and medallist with the majority much older than 12 year old Aimee. She had set her sights on gaining a bronze medal, the best position she could realistically given the calibre in the 16 strong field. The category was judged on a points system with each competitors single Kata being scored by three judges. Aimee was drawn roughly mid draw and performed Chatanyara Kushanku...


English Karate Federation National Championships - 5/6 April 2008

Alex Sell – National Champion, Aimee Sell National Medallist.

Shuhari-Kai sent a small squad of four to compete in the first English National Championships hosted by the EKF, the newly formed governing body for Karate in England. The championships were being held in Ponds Forge, Sheffield, over the weekend of 5-6th April 2008. Competing in the Girls 12-13yrs Kata event on day one of the championships was Aimee Sell. Aimee performed Bassai-Dai Kata in her opening round winning 3 flags to 0 and won her next round 2-1 following her Annan Kata. Her semi-final saw her cruise to the final after winning 3 flag to 0 following her Unshu Kata performance. The final proved very close as her Chatanyara Kushanku Kata lost out 2-1 to Ishinryu’s Rebecca Birch’s Kanko-Sho Kata. Aimee was pleased to medal securing her third national medal from three attempts...

AMA International Open Championships - 23/24 February 2008

1st Gold of the year for Aimee Sell

Aimee Sell from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travelled to the Harvey Hadden Sports Centre, Nottingham, on Saturday morning 23rd February to compete in the AMA International Open Championships. Aimee has had a good record at these championships collecting 2 gold and 1 bronze in the last three years for the Kata events she's competed in. This was Aimee's first competition of the year and she was looking forward to trying out some of her new Katas and try some of the new changes she's applied to her Katas...


I.K.G.A. Kumite Invitational - 24 February 2008

Rhys Floyde claimed Silver after two rounds winning 7-6 but then missing out 6-10. Callum Alboni lost 4-3 in his opening round match. Brandon Halling claimed Silver after winning 8-0, 4-0 and 5-1. He lost out in the final 5-1 settling for 2nd spot. Billie Lowry lost out 7-3 in her opening round as did Ali Ayerman losing 6-1. Andrew Ayerman claimed Bronze after winning 9-0 and 8-4 before missing out 7-5 in the final. Finally Aryan Ayerman was disqualified in 2nd round following his 1st round 5-1 win to end his medal hopes.


35th Junior & Cadet European Championships - 15/17 February 2008

Shuhari-Kai’s Alex Sell met up with his EKF England Squad compatriots at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday 12th February 2008, flying out to Italy to compete in the 35th Junior & Cadet European Championships. The squad arrived in Trieste early evening giving them enough time to settle into their rooms and prepare for dinner. The following two days consisted of training sessions at the Palatrieste Stadium, venue of the championships where they squad were put through their paces and their fighting/Kata skills honed in preparation for the 3 day tournament...


Toyakwai Greater London Championships - 17 February 2008

Jodie Miles Bronze in 15yrs & Over Kata plus U16yrs Dan Grade. Lawrence Grosvenor Bronze in Kumite. Remaining squad members, Aryan Ayerman, Andrew Ayerman and Callum Alboni failed to make it past their opening rounds in the Kumite events.


Shuhari-Kai Christmas Championships - 23 December 2007

Sunday 23rd December 2007 saw the Shuhari-Kai Club Invitational Christmas Championships & Social Evening take place at the RUSSC Club, Romford. The competition was well attended and started in earnest at 1:00pm commencing with the Kata events. The Junior 8 years and below competitors were up first and produced some fine Kata displays which were scored on points by the three judges. As the age and ability of competitor increased, so did the 'accessories' attached to each competitor - musical  and flashing Reindeer antlers, ankle weights etc. Very comical...


Alex Sell Selected for England - 9 December 2007

Congratulations to Shuhari-Kai's Alex Sell who attended the English Karate Federation training and squad selections on Sunday 9th December 2007. After a long hard day training and competing against his fellow opponents, Alex came through all his selection fights undefeated without dropping a single point. Alex was selected by National Squad Director, Ticky Donovan OBE, to represent England in the Cadet Under 70kg category in the forthcoming Cadet & Junior European Championships being held in Trieste, Italy, 15-17th February 2008. Alex's Sensei, Richard Burridge, was also attending the selection in his official capacity as a British Referee and was on hand to see Alex selected. Well done Alex and good luck for the Europeans.


EKF Northern Regional Championships - 25 November 2007

Gold & Bronze for Alex, Bronze for Aimee

The inarguable English Karate Federation Northern Regional Championships took place at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford, West Yorkshire, on Sunday 25th November 2007. Aimee and Alex Sell from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travelled up to the event the night before staying in Bradford's Holiday Inn Express, with an evening visit to Frankie and Benny's. Nice...


Welsh Open National Championships - 18 November 2007

Gold for Alex and Silver for Aimee Sell.

Alex and Aimee Sell accompanied by Sophie Roberts from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travelled to Welsh Institute of Sport, Cardiff, Wales, to compete in the Welsh Open National Karate Championships held on Sunday 18th November 2007. The Welsh Championships is always well attended and provides the kids with some stiff opposition to keep them working hard...


BT Exact Championships - 18 November 2007

Gold for Jodie, Silver for Callum, Bronze for Brandon

The EKKA hosted BT Exact Championships were held on Sunday 18th November 2007 and had four Shuhari-Kai students travel to Ipswich to compete. Jodie Miles was the only Kata entrant and competed in the Ladies Dan grade section where her Annan Kata secured her Gold against her 5 opponents.  Callum Alboni and Brandon Halling both competed in the same Kumite event and both successfully negotiated 2 rounds with Brandon securing Bronze and Callum claiming Silver after being disqualified in the final. Jordan Hodges failed to make it past the opening round as he too was disqualified for excessive contact. 


I.K.G.A. Invitational Kata Competition - 4 November 2007

Bronze for Callum Alboni

Two students from Shuhari-Kai travelled to Corringham in Essex, to attend the Goju-Kai invitational Kata competition.

Callum Alboni was in the mixed 4th to 5th Kyu 5 to 10 years category and received a first round bye. In round 2 he performed an excellent Pinan Sandan and won 3 flags to 0. In his next round he performed Pinan Nidan...


European Wado-Kai Championships 2007 - 3 November 2007

Alex Sell - European Wadokai Champion and Kata Medallist

The European Wado-Kai Championships, hosted by the Federation of European Wado-Kai, was held in Gothenburg, Sweden on Saturday 3rd November 2007. The championships meant a long weekend adventure starting very early Friday morning for the 7:00am fights from Stanstead Airport where the main squad met up. No problems with check-in and subsequently no problems with the 1 hour 30 minute or so flight to Gothenburg City Airport. Gothenburg City Airport, an old military airfield with a corrugated shed for the terminal. Actually it wasn't quite that bad, but it wasn't the largest airport in the world...
