Sour Grapes - June 2010

Having seen the English Karate Associations website it should be named English Karate Assassinations instead. Supposedly set up by 'two like minded parents' the website has done nothing but constantly attempt to discredit the English Karate Federation, it's directors, staff and coaches by publishing material from anonymous individuals armed with anonymous facts. The website is an embarrassment to Karate in England and just demonstrates the sour grapes people outside of the EKF have. The English Karate Federation has the full support of tens of thousands of individuals and has the full unequivocal support of Shuhari-Kai Karate Club.

AMA Out of EKF - June 2010

Notice for Shuhari-Kai Students

The Amateur Martial Association (AMA) are no longer members of the World Karate Federation recognised Karate Governing Body for England, the English Karate Federation (EKF). Members of the EKF which include include ourselves are no longer permitted to train or enter any AMA competitions.

It appears the EKF held a disciplinary tribunal against the AMA and its vice president Mr Peter Allen against two allegations. Both AMA and Mr Allen were found guilty on both charges. Sanctions were imposed but just days before the hearing, Mr Allen resigned his position from the board of the EKF and the AMA relinquished its membership from the EKF. It appears the AMA hit the panic button and pulled away to save face.  Full story on EKF website HERE.

The English Karate Federation has been in consultation with Sony Pictures, and has been exclusively chosen to help promote the pending release of the new movie 'Karate Kid' within English Karate.

As a result of the collaboration between Sony Pictures and the EKF, the competition 'Search for the UK Karate Kid' is open exclusively to members of the English Karate Federation under 18yrs of age. The winner of the first prize of the competition gets a once in a life time opportunity to walk the red carpet at the star studded premier of the Karate Kid in London, coupled with a chance to win their club £5000.

Summer Camp - May-June 2010

Shuhari-Kai's annual Summer Camp took place from Saturday 29th May to Saturday 5th June 2010 at Seashore holiday camp at Great Yarmouth. Amongst various training activities taking place there were a few Black Belt gradings being undertaken, team activity challenges and competitions.

The weather as we arrived on Saturday was the weather always commonly associated with camp, grey and rainy, you could only hope things would pick up!  The first night consisted of getting settled in, saying hello and discussing the week ahead.

As we awoke for the first day of training, a few hangovers had to be cleared but none too major. As the first day of training commenced we were put into teams for the week who would accumulate points and eventually become team champions. The events varied over the week from the ABCD game to a Kata competition...

Junior European Championships 2010 - Feb 2010

Shuhari-Kai's Alex Sell was once again selected to represent England at the 37th Cadet, Junior and U21's European Karate Championships which were held in Izmir, Turkey, 5-7th February 2010. This was Alex's first time fighting in the U21 years category having turned 18 years old in January and as a consequence faced some tough opponents in the U78kg Kumite event he was selected to compete in...

Shuhari-Kai Summer Updates

Its been a while since there's been any write ups so here we go as to what's been happening...

Latest Gradings

Congratulations to Callum Alboni who received his 3rd kyu brown belt at our Autumn weekend Camp in October. Also congratulations to Martin Lucus who graded to 7th Kyu and Charlie Keeling grading to 9th Kyu. Well done.

British Karate Federation National Championships

Alex Sell competed at the British Open in Edinburgh in September 2009 and won silver in the 16-17 -76kgs event dropping 3 points in the dying seconds of final after leading by 2 points after coming through three earlier rounds.

Copenhagen Open Karate Championships

At the beginning of October Alex Sell then travelled to Denmark to compete in the Copenhagen Open where he was unlucky not to medal in the Kata events coming 5th overall.  In the Kumite things didn't seem to go his way and went out early. Unlucky for Alex, can't medal all the time but he enjoyed the experience.

Welsh Open National Championships

The following week Alex then attended the Welsh Open, deciding to just concentrate on the Kumite as this was his build-up for the forthcoming Junior Worlds.  Alex won a silver in the -76kgs.  The final  went the full distance ending on a draw at full time but Alex lost out in extra time to settle for silver.

National Squad Training

There have been monthly National Squad training sessions with the latest one being held in Dudley. This session was for the England 'A' squad and invited athletes plus open to seniors.  As well as Alex Sell attending it was good to see Dean Bannister attend one of these sessions taking time out of his university degree course to dust off his mits and meet up with Alex. Dean trained for the 2 hour morning session whilst Alex trained the whole day. With the squad and seniors split into groups with Ian Cole, Greg Francis and Juliette Toney taking the groups everyone benefitted from a hard and comprehensive session.

WKF Junior World Championships - Pre-Training

Well Alex Sell is now at the pre-training camp in Halifax with the rest of the Kumite squad preparing for the Junior World Championships in Morocco on 12-15 November 2009. There have been early morning starts at 7.30am travelling to the dojo with the rest of the squad and study time to ensure Alex and the rest of the athletes keep up with their education.  The team are bonding well and are enjoying the training.  The squad will return Saturday and fly out to Morocco on Monday. This is Alex's 3rd Call up to represent England and all our best wishes are with him as he now enters the world stage.

Alex would like to thank Sensei Burridge for all his support and all the clubs and students that helped raised money to help Alex go to the Worlds Championships.  There will be a write up on how Alex gets on in Morocco.  Keep an eye on the EKF site as there is a blog, news, and pictures regarding the build up to the World Championships and the actual event.
