6, students attended the Meopham Junior Open competition on Sunday 20th July 2008.
Billie Lowry was the squads only Kata competitor of the day and she entered the 3rd & 2nd Kyu Kata event. She performed Seienchin Kata and scored 20.8 from the three judges coming 7th overall with 14 in her category...

CEWKA 12th Open Central England Karate Championships - 13 July 2008
2 Gold and 3 Silver
Shuhari-Kai had two students travel to Walsall in the West Midlands to compete in the CEWKA Central England Karate Championships which were held on Sunday 13th July 2008. Sophie Roberts and Alex Sell who had both successful outings the week
before competing in the Toyakwai Capital Open Championships in Clacton where they came home with a clutch of trophies each, were up for another challenge and looking to maintain their excellent performances. Alex's sister Aimee was also in attendance but the former Shuhari-Kai
student has now switched clubs to represent Ishinryu. The competition was being hosted by CEWKA Chief Instructor Stennett Harvey who is also the Wadokai England junior squad coach, and as we now know Stennett through Wadokai England, we were happy to support this event for the
first time. The attendance at the competition was quite large which was one of the factors why we didn't actually get away till gone 8:00pm. There were plenty of club level competitors in attendance and some familiar faces there too not only from national level tournaments but
from England squad members making the standard of competition quite wide ranging...

Toyakwai Capital Open Championships - 6 July 2008
2 Gold, 3 Silver & 2 Bronzes
Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell and Alex Sell from Shuhari-Kai competed at the TKA Capital Open on Sunday 6th July 2008 and came away with 7 trophies between them. Aimee was just pipped by Ishinryu's Emma Lucraft in in her Kata event and said "if you can't beat them,
join them". Sophie competed in three individual events and walked away with a silver and two bronzes. Alex collected two individual golds and then joined forces with Sophie and Adam from Ishinryu for the Senior Mixed Kumite Team event collecting silver. Well done. Full

London Youth Games - 29 June 2008
Havering Girls and Boys Champions... Again
Well done to Havering's Girls and Boys Karate Teams who competed at the London Youth Games on Sunday 29th June 2008. The Girls team took overall top spot to win their fourth successive title making them one of the most successful squads ever. The Boys team, not wishing to be
outdone by their female counterparts, also took top spot in the boys competition adding to their win last year ensuring Havering maintained a firm grip on both trophies for another year. Jordan Hodges, Alex Sell, Aimee Sell and Sophie Roberts from Shuhari-Kai all

Austrian Open Junior Championships - 21 June 2008
Aimee Sell - Austrian Open Champion
Shuhari-Kai's Aimee Sell, recently back from her win at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland, competed at the Junior Austrian Karate Championships in Salzburg, Austria on Saturday 21st June 2008, along with older brother
Alex Sell.
Aimee was competing in the Girls Under 14 years Kata event. After her initial bye in the first round she found herself against an Austrian opponent in the 2nd round but Aimee beat her comfortably 5 flags to nil. Aimee's 3rd round Swiss opponent suffered
the same fate losing out by 5 flags to nil to see Aimee into the quarter-finals. The 4th round quarter-finals saw Aimee against a German opponent and once again a 5 flags to nil win saw her comfortably through to the next round...

Shuhari-Kai Karate Club held its annual training camp at Seashore, Great Yarmouth, on the half term break.
Most arrived on the Saturday to begin the training on the Sunday in the main hall. It was good job training was inside because it rained for most of the time, but this didn’t’ dampen the students enthusiasm...

Commonwealth Open Karate Championships - 1 June 2008
Aimee Sell - Karate Commonwealth Open Champion
Congratulations to Aimee Sell - Karate Open Commonwealth Champion. Aimee competed in the Commonwealth Karate Championships which were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the Children's open events. Aimee negotiated her way through four rounds of the
Girls 10-12yrs Kata event winning each round 3 flags to nil to reach the final. Aimee's South African opponent performed a good Suparimpei Kata but Aimee's Annan Kata proved too strong as she secured a 2 flags to 1 victory to take the title. Excellent stuff Aimee.

EKF Southern Regional Championships - 25 May 2008
Alex Sell - Double Southern Regional Champion
Well done to Alex Sell who collected 2 Golds and a Bronze at the EKF Regional Championships held in Goresbrook Leisure Centre, Dagenham, on Sunday 25th May. Alex competed in two Kata events, Male 15-17yrs and Male Senior 16yrs & Over Kata
events, both 3rd Kyu grade & over. Alex went through two rounds in the 15-17yrs Kata event to claim Gold but lost out in the Senior event settling for Bronze. Alex then competed in the Male 16-17yrs, U70kg Kumite event and went through three rounds, winning 6-0, 3-0 & 3-2 to claim
his second Gold and medal number three for the day. Aimee Sell uncharacteristically went out in the opening round of the Girls U16yrs, Dan Grade Kata event losing 2-1 failing to medal despite performing a strong Kata. Unlucky Aimee and well done Alex. |
Ishinryu Summer Open Championships - 11 May 2008
Congratulations to double gold medallist Alex Sell and silver medallist Aimee Sell who competed at the Ishinryu Summer Open Championships on Sunday 11th May 2008. Alex collected gold in the Male 16-17yrs Kata and followed this up with
another gold in the Male 16-17yrs Kumite. 12 year old Aimee lost out to Ishinryu's Emma Lucraft in the Girls U16yrs Kata to claim a silver. Well done to both. |
SENI08 Karate Classic Championships - 27 April 2008
A small squad of five from Havering’s Shuhari-Kai Karate Club, competed in the Karate Classic Tournament being held as part of the SENI08
Martial Arts exhibition in London’s Excel Centre. The tournament took place on Sunday 27th April 2008 commencing at around 10:00am with the Kata events.
Aimee Sell competed in the Mixed Kata (Patterned Forms), U16yrs, Black-Belt category. This was an extremely tough category featuring a host of current English National Champions and medallist with the majority much older
than 12 year old Aimee. She had set her sights on gaining a bronze medal, the best position she could realistically given the calibre in the 16 strong field. The category was judged on a points system with each competitors single Kata being scored by three judges. Aimee was drawn
roughly mid draw and performed Chatanyara Kushanku...

English Karate Federation National Championships - 5/6 April 2008
Alex Sell – National Champion, Aimee Sell National Medallist.
Shuhari-Kai sent a small squad of four to compete in the first English National Championships hosted by the EKF, the newly formed governing body for Karate in England. The championships were being held in Ponds Forge, Sheffield, over
the weekend of 5-6th April 2008. Competing in the Girls 12-13yrs Kata event on day one of the championships was Aimee Sell. Aimee performed Bassai-Dai Kata in her opening round winning 3 flags to 0 and won her next round 2-1 following her Annan Kata. Her semi-final saw her
cruise to the final after winning 3 flag to 0 following her Unshu Kata performance. The final proved very close as her Chatanyara Kushanku Kata lost out 2-1 to Ishinryu’s Rebecca Birch’s Kanko-Sho Kata. Aimee was pleased to medal securing her third national medal from three
attempts...

AMA International Open Championships - 23/24 February 2008
1st Gold of the year for Aimee Sell
Aimee Sell from Shuhari-Kai Karate Club travelled to the Harvey Hadden Sports Centre, Nottingham, on Saturday morning 23rd February to compete in the AMA International Open Championships. Aimee has had a good record at these championships collecting 2 gold and 1 bronze in
the last three years for the Kata events she's competed in. This was Aimee's first competition of the year and she was looking forward to trying out some of her new Katas and try some of the new changes she's applied to her Katas...

I.K.G.A. Kumite Invitational - 24 February 2008
Rhys Floyde claimed Silver after two rounds winning 7-6 but then missing out 6-10. Callum Alboni lost 4-3 in his opening round match. Brandon Halling claimed Silver after winning 8-0, 4-0 and 5-1. He lost out in the final 5-1 settling for
2nd spot. Billie Lowry lost out 7-3 in her opening round as did Ali Ayerman losing 6-1. Andrew Ayerman claimed Bronze after winning 9-0 and 8-4 before missing out 7-5 in the final. Finally Aryan Ayerman was disqualified in 2nd round following his 1st round
5-1 win to end his medal hopes. |
35th Junior & Cadet European Championships - 15/17 February 2008
Shuhari-Kai’s Alex Sell met up with his EKF England Squad compatriots at Heathrow Airport on Tuesday 12th February 2008, flying out to Italy to compete in the 35th Junior & Cadet European Championships. The squad arrived in Trieste early
evening giving them enough time to settle into their rooms and prepare for dinner. The following two days consisted of training sessions at the Palatrieste Stadium, venue of the championships where they squad were put through their paces and their fighting/Kata skills honed in
preparation for the 3 day tournament...
