BIKO ChampionshipsAll good squad turnout for the BIKO Championships saw a number of new faces enter the Shuhari-Kai Squad and head off to Grundy Park Leisure Centre on Sunday 19th September 2004. Jade Lewis picked up a bronze in her individual Kumite event in her first competition and lived to tell the tale. David Wales also picked up a bronze after teaming up with Lawrence Grosvenor for the Men's Team Kumite event after being knocked out in his individual event. Although Dean Bannister failed to land a medal in his first competition, he showed some real speed and with a little more experience will be amongst the medallists soon enough. Zak Moussa also had his first taste of competition and had a tough fight in the Cadet Kumite event. Hopefully he'll be back for more. Jordan Hodges, Samuel Gee and Alex Sell picked up team Kumite silver whilst Alex also collected an individual Kumite bronze and an individual Kata silver. Another team silver for Kata this time as the girls Aimee Sell, Jodie Miles and Sophie Roberts joined forces narrowly missing out on the gold in the team event. Sophie also collected an individual silver in her Kumite event missing the gold after getting caught in extra time in the final fight. Abigail Gee continued her good run with a bronze in her Kumite event whilst our only gold of the day went to golden girl Aimee Sell who was head and shoulders above the opposition in her Kata event. Vishaal Dovedi and Ali Ayerman failed to pick up any medals but showed good spirit and determination and were unlucky to loose the decisions.
All in all a great team spirit was shown by all with the squad supporting eachother and offering encouragement and congratulations, especially to the newcomers to the squad. Well done to the regulars and a big well done to newcomers. |
British Future ChampionsThe 2nd British Future Champions tournament for 2004 was held at on Sunday 12th September at the New Generation Sports Centre, in Dudley, West Midlands. A squad of five from Shuhari-Kai made the long trip to Dudley and were a little disappointed, not with their individual performances, but with the perceived results.
Up first to compete was Aimee Sell in the 9yrs and under Kata
event... |

Progress made at Seishin Open but no golden touchA small squad of six travelled to Grundy Park Leisure Centre in
Cheshunt on Sunday 1st August, to compete in the Seishin open
Karate tournament. The squad collected 1 silver and 2 bronzes between them
which is an improvement on last year when the squad failed to collect a
single medal. All the medals were picked up in the Kumite events whilst
the Kata events, which were held first, proved frustrating. Jordan
Hodges was up first competing in the Under 10 yrs Novice to 5th Kyu
category... |
TKA Essex Open ChampionshipsA small squad of five ventured to Clacton on Sunday 4th July
and celebrated by coming home with eight medals, 1 Gold, 3 Silver and 4
Bronze. There was some good performances from the squad and had they got the
breaks, more of the medals would have been gold. As ever the Kata events
were first and this time we had two entrants in the Dan grade category. Up
against the points system for a single Kata display, Jodie Miles
performed an outstanding Seipai Kata... |
British Karate Federation Championships1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes from the BKF championships. The trip to Ponds Forge in Sheffield proved fruitful for Shuhari-Kai as we picked up 5 medals from the event. Lawrence Grosvenor picked up Gold in the male cadets event but injured his foot in the process. Let's hope it isn't too serious. JJ Burridge did extremely well finishing 5th in his event and narrowly missed out in the Kata too. Aimee Sell in her first major national championships won silver in her Kata event, hopefully gold will be next on her list. Jodie Miles put up an excellent display in both kata and her Kumite events but it was not to be and just missed out on the medals after disqualification in her kumite event whilst leading 9-4. After some bruising rounds Sophie Roberts made it to the Kumite final, but after an injury to her knee Sophie had to settle for Silver as she was disqualified for breaking the '10 second' rule. She did well in Kata too but lost out in repecharge. In the boys Kata event, after being beaten in the 3rd round, Alex Sell won bronze coming through the repecharge rounds to take the medal. Alex also won a bronze in the boys Kumite. In his semi-final match, after going through extra time with the scores still at 0-0, the judges decided it was not to be Alex's day and awarded the match to his opponent 3 flags to 1. Alex then secured his second medal of the championships by securing the bronze through the repecharge rounds. This was the first time most of the squad had entered the BKF Championships, and they did extremely well and look forward to the next one. SQUAD: JJ Burridge, Lawrence Grosvenor, Jodie Miles, Sophie Roberts, Aimee Sell & Alex Sell. |
London Youth Games 2004***UPDATE*** Just in... The Havering boys and girls teams both finished in second place each out of the 32 boroughs competing. The girls team maintained their overall standing finishing in second spot last year despite missing some key competitors, whilst the boys team improved on last years fourth place to move up to second. The boys squad is relatively young and dominated the lower categories and both teams now look good for next years games.
3 Golds, 4 Silvers and 5 Bronzes for the Havering squad at Crystal
Palace. Sunday 20th June 2004 saw the Havering Karate squad take on the rest
of London to compete for glory at the one of Europe's largest sporting
events, the London Youth Games. Following the Havering games, the squad was
selected to represent their borough and compete against London's finest.

Traditional Karate Magazine Open Championships4 Golds, 2 Silvers and 3 Bronzes from the Trad Mag Open held on Sunday 13th June at Dudley. Aimee Sell claimed a Kata bronze in her first competition since her eye operation. It won't be long before she's fighting so watch out. 4th in the Kata event, Alex Sell claimed gold in the individual Kumite event and followed it up with another gold in the team Kumite event along with club mates Samuel Gee and Luke Bannister who also came 4th in individual Kumite. Jodie Miles, Aimee Sell and Sophie Roberts collected a bronze for team Kata. Sophie did exceptionally well as she came 4th in individual Kata, collected a bronze in individual Kumite and gold in team Kumite with club mate Abigail Gee. Vishaal Dovedi made medals big time as he picked up two silvers for individual and team Kumite. Lawrence 'Big G' Grosvenor entered the adult Kumite category and showed them how he earned his England badge as he went on to claim gold. |

Wado-Kai Open ChampionshipsSix Shuhari-Kai students travelled to Reading to take part in the
Wado-Kai Open Karate Championships on Sunday 23rd May. The squad came home
with 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 1 Bronze. Lawrence Grosvenor maintained Shuhari-Kai's record of winning a
gold in every competition this year by picking up the only Gold in his
individual Kumite event. After his first round bye, Lawrence stormed through
the rounds winning 9-1, 6-2. Lawrence's semi-final opponent pulled out due
to injury leaving Lawrence to take the gold following a 2-0 win. Lawrence
followed up on his gold by securing a silver in the team Kumite event after
teaming up to form a two man team. Unfortunately, after drawing in the
final, they had to settle for silver as they had no third
fighter... |
Ishinryu Summer InvitationalSaturday 15th May 2004 saw 11 members from Shuhari-Kai attend the
Ishinryu Summer Invitational held at Hornchurch Sports Centre, Harrow
Lodge. The competition turned out to be an extremely large event with 40 competitors
on average in the peewee categories. Shuhari-Kai brought home 4 Gold's,
2 Silvers & 3 Bronzes which was a vast improvement on last
year when we brought home 2 silvers and 2 bronzes. The squad also had a
number of quarter final places and 4th places which shows how much the
squad has improved within the year. All-in-all this was one of Shuhari's
best displays given the categories and level of competition... |
Havering Games Karate CompetitionThe Karate competition of the Havering Games took place on Saturday 8th
May at Hornchurch Sports Centre. Despite being publicised and all local
clubs informed, the turnout was disappointing. This led to a number of
Kumite categories being merged with some participants fighting in higher
weight categories than they would normally do... Results and medal table updated... Here |
Keep on RunningCongratulations to 'Marathon Man' Gary Page who recently completed the London Marathon. Months of hard work and training paid off as Gary completed the grueling 26 mile course in four and a half hours coming approximately 19,000th. Gary raised lots of money for the Shuhari-Kai squad, so a big thank you to Gary and well done. |
Jack Petchey Leadership AwardCongratulations to Steve Edwards who has been awarded the Jack Petchey Leadership Award 2004 for his services to Shuhari-Kai Karate Club. EKGB Senior National ChampionshipsJust in from the Senior Championships... Sammy Burridge lost lost out in the final round of repecharge, as did Wayne Burridge who's just back into competition following his accident. Wayne went out with a 'Bang' so to speak as he was disqualified for breaking his opponents nose. Watch out world, Wayne's back! Our last fighter Big 'G' Lawrence Grosvenor secured Gold to become England Senior Champion and has truly justified his place in the England team. Well done to the small squad who attended. Oss. |
East of England Open Karate ChampionshipsThe East of England Open proved successful the Shuhari-Kai squad as 3 Golds, and 2 Silvers were secured on the day with Jodie Miles picking up double Gold,
A squad of 6 travelled to St. Joseph’s
College in Ipswich, on Sunday 14th March to compete in this EKKA
hosted competition. With four mats laid out it was obvious there would be a
large turn-out, it’s just a shame that for the majority of the time, only
two were being used at any one time... |
North East Essex Karate ChampionshipsThe trip to Clacton proved fruitful once again for the 5 members of the
Shuhari-Kai squad who set off at 7.00 in the morning on Sunday 7th March to
compete in the North East Essex Karate Championships. 5 medals were picked
up from the event - 1 Gold, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronzes... |
CADET & JUNIOR EUROPEAN KARATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
England Karate coach Ticky Donovan said "Lawrence was always going to find it tough against a lad who was so much taller than him. The trouble is that Lawrence does struggle in height terms against a lot of his opponents, but he is a good lad who is keen to learn and will bounce back from this again, that's for sure."
The England team finished the championships with one individual gold and silver and one team bronze, leaving them in eleventh place overall in the medal table with Spain topping the table. Click HERE for full results. |
